Pitching Leads Bronchos To Sweep of Augustana

No. 11 Central Oklahoma Has Won 11 In A Row Following Doubleheader Sweep In Kansas

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Jordyn Pipkin threw a one-hit masterpiece and Emily Deramus clubbed a two-run home run to hand Central Oklahoma a 2-0 second-game victory that gave the No. 11-ranked Bronchos a sweep of Augustana Friday on the first day of the MIAA/NSIC Challenge.

UCO took the opener 4-2 before following with its third shutout of the season to run its winning streak to 11 straight. The Bronchos, now 18-6,  return Saturday to face St. Cloud State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader before finishing with two games against Winona State at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

"Those were two really good wins against a tough team that beat us earlier this year," said head coach Cody White, whose team lost to Augie 2-1 on Feb. 2. "We pitched lights out today. "Terin and Jordyn both threw great and we came up with just enough offense."

UCO scored the only runs of the second game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Rylee Lemos led off with a single through the left side and Deramus followed with her sixth homer of the year, this one a shot to center field.

Pipkin needed just 82 pitches in earning her second shutout and improving to 7-3. The junior right-hander struck out three and walked just one, with Augie's lone hit a single in the top of the fourth.

Ritz had two of Central's seven hits.

The Bronchos grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener. Lemos started the game with a single and stolen base and eventually scored on an error.

Ritz escaped a jam in the third with a strikeout and infield pop-up after the Vikings put runners on second and third with one out.

UCO extended its lead in the fifth. Deramus led off with a single up the middle and Ritz reached on an error before both advanced on Jacee Minter's groundout.

McKenna Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly, Tatum Long belted an RBI double to left-center and Shayleigh Odom drove a run-scoring single up the middle to make it 4-0.

Augie scored its only runs of the day in the bottom of the sixth to get within 4-2 and had two runners on with two outs in the seventh when Johnson snared a line drive at third to end the game.

Ritz picked up her fifth complete game in moving to 9-2. The junior right-hander scattered six hits while walking two and fanning five.

Odom had two of UCO's eight hits.
