UCO Wins Opener Against Fort Hays State

Central Oklahoma Picks Up 8-2 Game 1 Win In MIAA Series

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used a solid and consistent effort at the plate combined with strong pitching to outlast Fort Hays State 8-2 Friday in the first of three MIAA games at Wendell Simmons Field this weekend.

UCO improved to 20-5 on the season with the win and 7-4 in league play. Fort Hays State is 18-7 on the season and 6-5 in the MIAA.

"That was as solid all-around as we've been and that's good to see," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We did a lot of things right and the plate and pitching continued to be good. We're happy with the guys and the way they started the series on a good note."

Game 2 is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, with Game 3 at 1 p.m. Sunday.

On Friday night, a strong start by Caleb Burchfield put the Bronchos in good position to win the game, but he also got way more help than he needed from the offense.

Burchfield threw 7.0 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out six batters on the start.

Fort Hays managed a two-out double in the top of the first before Burchfield got the third out, his second strikeout, of the inning. Then he had a 1-0 lead when he came back for the second inning.

UCO gave Burchfield a 3-1 lead in the second, and eventually led 6-2 when he exited after seven innings.

Austin Burda followed him out of the bullpen and struck out two in the eighth. Race Felter got one strikeout in the ninth as he closed out the evening.

UCO scattered 10 hits on the night, with Ty Hammack, Orlando Gonzalez, and Shea Morrison each recording two hits.

Hammack led of the bottom of the first with a double, then a sacrifice-bunt from Carson Carpenter and an RBI groundout by Caden Robertson gave the Bronchos the 1-0 lead.

Morrison's big double off the wall in right center scored Justin Santoyo to give the Bronchos a 2-1 lead. Then Haden O'Toole scored Gonzalez with an RBI groundout to make it 3-1.

Morrison added another RBI with a sac-fly in the fourth that scored Santoyo and gave the Bronchos a 4-2 lead. Santoyo struck out to lead off the inning, but advanced to first on a wild pitch. He moved up to second on another wild pitch, then third on a flyout by Gonzalez before scoring on Morrison's sac-fly.

Carpenter's RBI double scored Hammack in the fifth to make it 5-2. Robertson's RBI single scored Hammack in the seventh to make it 6-2.

O'Toole added one more with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the eighth that scored Gonzalez, and Hammack's infield single after that scored Ty Chapman to make it 8-2.
