Bronchos Win Round One With NSU

Central Oklahoma Beats Northeastern State 9-4 In Game 1 of Three-Game MIAA Series

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma scored early and often in a 9-4 win over Northeastern State Tuesday in an MIAA midweek game at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 19-5 on the season with the win and are now 6-4 in MIAA play. NSU (10-14, 1-9) will host UCO for Game 2 in two weeks and come back to Edmond for Game 3 next month.

"It was good to see the guys come out and be aggressive with their bats," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Pitching was good again on a tough day and we did a good job with our approach."

UCO scored in seven of eight innings it came to the plate, including three in the top of the first to set the tone for the night.

Leading off the bottom of the first, UCO started with a single, two doubles, and a one-out single to quickly grab a 3-0 lead.

The Bronchos scored one run in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings. Shea Morrison's hit solo homers in the third and fifth. Caden Robertson's RBI single scored Carson Carpenter for the second time in the game to make it 4-0 in the second. Morrison's first shot made it 5-0. Cameron Uselton's RBI double gave Carpenter three runs scored in the game and UCO a 6-0 lead. Then Morrison made it 7-1 with his second consecutive home run.

Carpenter also hit a home run on Tuesday, a two-RBI shot in the seventh that gave UCO a 9-1 lead, and finished the day 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, four runs scored and three RBIs.

Chase Yarger got the start for the Bronchos and the redshirt freshman picked up his first career win. The right-hander from Moore threw 5.0 innings and only gave up one run on six hits. Yarger was efficient with six strikeouts and five groundouts on the windy day in Edmond.

Justin Smith came out of the bullpen first and and got the first out in the sixth before Eric Rohrer followed him out of the pen and got the second and third outs in the inning.

Racer Felter pitched the seventh and started the eighth with a walk before Preston Giltner followed him. Felter had a batter reach on an error before a strikeout-interference play got him two outs in the seventh and then he got a groundout to end the inning.

Giltner struck out the first batter he faced and then got a double play to erase the walk and end the eighth inning. In the ninth, he gave up back-to-back singles and a walk. Peyton Medeiros came on in relief and a two-RBI double made it 9-3. A sacrifice fly followed to make it the final 9-4 before Medeiros struck out the final batter to end the game.

Carpenter's four hits led the way. Robertson, Uselton, and Morrison each had two hits. Ty Hammack, Justin Santoyo, Wyatt Gray, and Garrett Long all had hits as well.

Central Oklahoma is one game into a four-game homestand. The Bronchos host Fort Hays State (18-6, 6-4) this weekend for a three-game MIAA series. UCO plays Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
