Bronchos Fall Short In Upset Bid

Central Oklahoma Drops 76-70 Decision To Sixth-Ranked Northwest Missouri

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma came up short in an upset bid of sixth-ranked Northwest Missouri Thursday night, with the Bronchos falling 76-70 in the MIAA matchup at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma is 19-10 on the season following the setback, and 11-10 in the MIAA. The Bronchos remain in sixth place in the league standings with one game left in the 2023-24 regular season. UCO hosts Newman Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and will head to Kansas City, Missouri for the 2024 MIAA Basketball Championships next week.

Jaden Wells led all scorers Thursday with 28 points. Danquez Dawsey added 20 points too as Central Oklahoma shot 51.2 percent from the floor in the game. The Bronchos were also 23-for-28 from the free-throw line in the game, but just 3-for-11 from behind the 3-point line.

Wells finished the game 7-for-11 overall and 2-for-4 from outside the arc. He went 12-for-13 at the line to lead all players. Dawsey shot 6 of 11 overall, missing both of his attempts from deep. He went 8-for-9 at the charity stripe. Dawsey added three rebounds and three assists. Wells grabbed two boards and had one assist and also led the team with three steals.

Luke Haasl joined the two guards in double figures with 11 points. He went 5-for-7 from the floor and 1-for-3 from the line. Haasl had five boards and a block in the game.

Majok Majouk posted a 7-point, 7-rebound line and joined Wells with a team-high three steals. He also had two blocks. Jalyn Turner and Caiden Punt scored two points each. Five Bronchos played but did not score on Thursday.

UCO led for 10:57 in the first half that saw four lead changes and three ties. The last of those ties was 32-32 with 2:19 remaining in the first half. The Bronchos charged with a 6-0 run to end the half, taking a 38-32 lead into halftime. The last bucket on that run was a tip-in at the buzzer from Turner.

Central Oklahoma maintained the lead from that final two minutes, until seven and a half minutes into the second half. Northwest outscored the Bronchos 12-7 in the first six and a half minutes before the Bearcats took a 46-45 lead with 12:35 to play. UCO never led again.

After taking the lead, Northwest outscored UCO 18-8 over the next six and a half minutes. The Bearcats held their biggest lead of the game, 64-53, with 5:21 to play.

The Bronchos answered with a 6-0 run and cut it to five points, 64-59, with 3:43 to play. But Northwest kept UCO at bay down the stretch. Central got within six points on four different occasions in the final three minutes, but couldn't get closer before the 76-70 final.

Central Oklahoma needs a win Saturday against Newman to secure the No. 6 seed in next week's conference tournament. The Bronchos beat Newman in January in Wichita.
