Bronchos Celebrate Home Finale With Big Win

Central Oklahoma Crushed Newman 83-62 Saturday In The Final Regular Season Game

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma's Senior Day celebration of fifth-year veteran Jalyn Turner carried over into the game Saturday as the Bronchos flew past the Newman Jets 83-62 at Hamilton Field House.

UCO finished the 2023-24 regular season with a 20-10 overall record, and a 12-10 mark in the MIAA. The win clinched the No. 6 seed for Central Oklahoma, which will play No. 3-seeded Pittsburg State next Friday in the 2024 MIAA Basketball Championship quarterfinals in Kansas City, Missouri.

"The guys did a great job of staying focused today," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "It was so great to honor JT before the game. He's such a valuable member of the team. He's such a great young man. And then everyone played well and we found a way to get it done.

"Now it's time to focus on the playoffs," Hoffman continued. "We're all 0-0 and a new season starts next week."

Hoffman is in his fifth year leading the Bronchos. Turner was a true freshman in 2019 when both arrived on campus. Both have missed one game since with Turner playing in 145 of 146 games in his career. Hoffman who sat out earlier this year due to illness, is 94-51 in five seasons leading the Bronchos.

On Saturday, Central Oklahoma led for 37:29 in the game. Turner scored the first basket of the game. Newman tied it, 2-2. After Jaden Wells scored the first of his game-high 29 points, Newman took a 5-4 lead. Turner then made one free-throw to tie the game, 5-5, before Newman took a 7-5 lead with a pair of free-throws. But when Danquez Dawsey sank a floating jumper in the lane to tie the game, 7-7, then hit a pull-up jumper to give UCO a 9-7 lead, the Bronchos never looked back.

UCO had runs of 6-0, 8-0, and 5-0 later in the half as they pulled away. The Bronchos led 43-35 at halftime.

Central really turned it on in the second half, outscoring Newman 40-27 to earn the 21-point victory.

UCO shot 54.1 percent from the floor on Saturday, making 33 of 61 total shots. The Bronchos were 8-for-20 from behind the arc and 9-for-13 at the free-throw line.

Wells led all scorers with 29 points. He moved into third-place on Central Oklahoma's all-time scoring list as he climbed up to 1,857 points. Wells went 11-for-26 on Saturday, 1-for-10 from behind the arc, and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. The fourth-year junior added seven rebounds and one steal.

Dawsey added 19 points, five assits, and three rebounds, plus one blocked shot. He wetn 7-for-11 from the floor including 3-for-5 from outside. Dawsey was 2-for-2 at the line.

Turner scored a career-high 16 points, closing out his Hamilton Field House career in style. The fifth-year senior went 6-for-7 from the field, 3-for-4 from behind the arc, and 1-for-4 from the free-throw line. Turner added four rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one blocked shot.

Haasl made it four in double figures with 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting. He pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds and blocked three shots in the game.

Those four accounted for 72 of Central Oklahoma's 83 points. Matthew Willenborg added six off the bench and Parker Hannah knocked down one 3-pointer for the remainder of UCO's scoring load.

UCO now turns to the postseason. In 12 seasons since joining the MIAA, the Bronchos have qualified for 11 postseason tournament appearances. UCO has made five straight since Hoffman took the job. The MIAA Basketball Championships begin Wednesday at noon from historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The Bronchos will play Pittsburg State Friday at 8:15 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
