UCO Opens MIAA Series With Win

Central Oklahoma Beat Missouri Western 6-3 Friday Night In Edmond

EDMOND – No. 17 Central Oklahoma opened its MIAA series against Missouri Western with a 6-3 win Friday night at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO improved to 14-2 on the season with the win, and 2-2 in the MIAA. Missouri Western is 9-6 on the year and also 2-2 in league play.

"That was a good way to open the series and get the win," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "I was proud of the team for coming out aggressive, and we got a little complacent, but we found a way to get it done and we got the win so that's what matters most."

Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, doing so with five hits. But UCO didn't get another hit until the fifth inning, when the Bronchos made it 4-0.

Missouri Western scored twice in the sixth before UCO answered back with one more in the bottom half of the inning. Western added one more in the seventh, and so did Central to get to the 6-3 lead.

Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos on Friday and the senior right-hander from Catoosa picked up the win. Burchfield threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks. He struck out three batters in the game.

Preston Giltner followed him out of the bullpen and threw 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. Austin Burda was next out and got a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth.

Central Oklahoma closer Valek Cisneros, a senior right-hander from Clinton, came on in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season. Cisneros struck out one batter, got a line out to second, and then gave up a double down the right field line. But he finished with a backward K to end the game and give the Bronchos the win.

Seven Bronchos combined for eight hits on Friday. Kaleb Glass went 2-for-5. Ty Hammack, Carson Carpenter, Cameron Uselton, Ty Chapman, Caden Robertson, and Garrett Long all had one hit in the game. Uselton and Robertson both hit doubles for the only two extra-base hits for UCO.

Hammack, Glass, Carpenter, and Uselton had four straight hits in the bottom of the first inning. Carpenter's was a two-RBI single. He got picked off before Uselton's double. Uselton then scored when Chapman got UCO its fifth hit of the first inning to lead 3-0.

Hammack scored again in the fifth. He drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on Glass's second hit of the game. After Carpenter was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Uselton hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hammack and give UCO the 4-0 lead.

After MWSU got on the board in the top of the sixth, UCO had a response waiting. Chapman drew a walk and Martin pinch-hit with Robertson in place of catcher, Matt Baughn. Robertson, making his UCO debut after missing the first month of the season with a injury, drilled an 0-1 pitch over the left fielder and off the wall, scoring Chapman to give UCO a 5-2 lead.

In the seventh, Uselton drew a walk and Aiden Proctor came on to pinch run. He stole second moments later, then third. After Orlando Gonzalez drew a walk, both he and Proctor stole second and home to give UCO the 6-3 lead.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western will play Game 2 Saturday at 3 p.m. with Game 3 scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
