Bronchos Drop Game 2 In Edmond

Central Oklahoma Falls 5-2 In MIAA Series With Missouri Western, Rubber Match Set For Sunday

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma struggled to put the ball in play Saturday and fell short, 5-2, in Game 2 of its three-game MIAA series with Missouri Western.

The Bronchos are now 14-3 on the season and 2-3 in the MIAA. The Griffons from St. Joseph, Missouri are 10-6 overall and 3-2 in league play.

"We didn't have a good approach at the plate and we found out what happens when you don't," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We would like to think we pitched well enough to have a chance, but we just couldn't get anything going with the bats today.

UCO was held to just four hits Saturday and all were singles. Ty Hammack and Caden Robertson both went 1-for-4 and Carson Carpenter went 2-for-4. Robertson had one RBI to score Hammack, and Ty Chapman found his way all the way around the bases without the ball ever getting put in play.

Dax Sharp got the start for UCO and the lefty threw two innings, giving up four hits and one run – a solo homer in the top of the first. Sharp struck out one batter in his two innings.

Brady Gilmore, Chase Yarger, Justin Smith, Brandon Gomez, and Eric Rohrer all came out of the bullpen. Gilmore threw 2 2/3 innings and gave up two hits with one strikeout. Yarger threw 1 1/3 and gave up four hits and two runs. He struck out two batters. Smith, Gomez and Rohrer all threw one inning.

MWSU got the 1-0 lead in the first. Chapman drew a walk in the fourth, moved to second and then third on a passed ball and a wild pitch, and then stole home to even the game, 1-1.

Yarger gave up two in the sixth, but Robertson got one back with an RBI single to left center in the eighth inning to make it 3-2. Gomez gave up two more in the ninth that made it 5-2.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western will play Sunday at 1 p.m. in the rubber match to decide the series.
