Bronchos Topple Oklahoma Baptist

EDMOND (Feb. 9) – Jordyn Pipkin dominated down the stretch in the pitching circle and Central Oklahoma overcame an early deficit to trim Oklahoma Baptist 5-2 Friday afternoon on the first day of the UCO/OC Festival.

Pipkin gave up a two-run home run in the top of the second inning, but was virtually untouchable the rest of the way. The Bronchos responded with four runs in their half of the second to take the lead, then added an insurance run in the fifth to avenge last week's season-opener 2-1 loss to OBU.

It was the home opener at Gerry Pinkston Stadium for UCO, which improved to 2-4. The Bronchos return Saturday to face Southern Nazarene at 1:30 p.m. and Maryville at 3:30.

"Jordyn really pitched well, especially over the last four or five innings," head coach Cody White said. "We made a few things happen offensively and came out with a good win over a tough team."

Pipkin retired the final 12 batters of the game in finishing with a three-hitter. The junior right-hander struck out three and walked just one in an 87-pitch outing.

She gave up two of those hits and the walk in the second when the Bison took its brief lead on a two-out, two-run homer. Pipkin overwhelmed OBU the rest of the way, allowing only base-runner the final five innings.

UCO answered back quickly in its half of the second, starting with Terin Ritz's lead-off homer that soared high and far over the left field wall. The Bronchos then loaded the bases with one out on Makella Mobly's infield single and walks to Karson Jennings and Rylee Anglen.

Emily Deramus' infield hit plated one run and McKenna Johnson followed with a two-run single through the left side to put the Bronchos on top 4-2.

It stayed that way until the fifth. Johnson led off the frame with a double to left-center and she came around on Shayleigh Odom's two-out bloop double down the left field line.

The Bronchos finished with 10 hits, getting two each from Lemos, Johnson, Odom and Mobly.
