UCO Sweeps Friday Doubleheader Against Monticello

Bronchos Take First Two In Four Game Series, Play Another Doubleheader Saturday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma swept a doubleheader against Arkansas Monticello Friday at Wendell Simmons Field, taking the first game 9-4 before earning a 2-1 win in the second game.

Central Oklahoma, which is now 6-0 on the season, played Friday's games as the visiting team in Edmond. The four-game series was originally scheduled to take play in Monticello, Arkansas before forecasted rain shifted the matchup back to Edmond. The teams will play another doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.

"I don't think we played our best today, but we did enough to get the win," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Both games were really close. We got a little rally in the end of the first game, but it was tight. Monticello is a good team and we're going to have to work harder tomorrow to get another one, maybe two."

Martin is in his ninth year as head coach of the UCO baseball program. Friday, he won his 250th and 251st games as the Central skipper.

Friday's doubleheaders were scheduled to be played as a seven-inning game and a nine-inning game, but the first one went nine so the second game was shortened to seven innings.

UCO nearly closed out the first game in seven, but a sixth-inning rally by Monticello caused extras to be played. Central scored in the first inning when Justin Santoyo doubled to score Carson Carpenter. UAM answered with one in the bottom of the first to tie the game, 1-1. Then the Bronchos got one in the third on Carpenter's solo homer, and two more in the fourth on Orlando Gonzalez's two-run blast.

Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos and threw five innings, striking out six batters and allowing just the one run on five hits and no walks.

Justin Smith came on in the bottom of the sixth and only lasted 2/3 of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk.

Valek Cisneros then came out of the bullpen and threw 2 1/3, striking out two batters. He gave up two hits and two walks, but got UCO through the end of the sixth, the seventh, and the eighth innings.

In the top of the ninth, UCO blew things open. Kaleb Glass reached on an error and eventually scored on Ty Hammack's RBI single. Santoyo then jacked a three-run home run to right field, scoring Carpenter and Hammack. Cameron Uselton added a solo homer right after that.

Central Oklahoma 9, Arkansas Monticello 4.

Brandon Gomez came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth and did give up one hit, but got a strikeout, a flyout, and a groundout to end the game.

Hammack led off Game 2 with a double and then scored on a wild pitch to give Central a 1-0 lead. UAM tied it in the third on an RBI single. And then Hammack led off the sixth with a single and later scored on another wild pitch.

Central Oklahoma 2, Arkansas Monticello 1.

The Bronchos only had four hits in the second game. Gonzalez hit a double and Wyatt Gray had a single to go with Hammack's two base hits.

Brett Pense got the start in Game 2 and the win after throwing five strong innings. The rookie is now 2-0 on the season. He gave up three hits and issued two walks, but only had the one run allowed on the day. Monticello left six on base in the game.

Austin Burda followed Pense and picked up the save, striking out three batters in two innings of work.

Central Oklahoma and Arkansas Monticello will play another twin bill on Saturday beginning at noon. The Bronchos are scheduled to play their first road game of the season Tuesday, Feb. 13 before hosting Oklahoma Christian next Saturday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.
