UCO Sweeps Monticello For Eighth Straight Win

Bronchos Blank Boll Weevils In First Game, Overpower UAM In Game 2

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma swept another doubleheader against Arkansas Monticello Saturday afternoon to improve to 8-0 on the season.

UCO topped the Boll Weevils from Monticello, Ark. 4-0 in the first game, a seven-inning affair, before coming away with a 5-2 victory in nine innings in the second game.

"We played pretty good this weekend," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "It wasn't perfect and some guys didn't have their best weekend, but overall, we did good enough to win and that's what matters. We've got a long way to go, but we did a good job this weekend."

UCO is 8-0 for the first time since 2007 (10-0). The Bronchos are scheduled to face East Central in Ada, Oklahoma on Tuesday before a home-and-home weekend with OC next Saturday and Sunday.

Preston Giltner got the start for the Bronchos Saturday and the junior transfer from Butler was brilliant. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a complete game one-hitter after seven innings. Giltner walked one batter and hit another but got through 21 of 24 Monticello batters on the day. He struck out six in seven innings of work.

Central scored three of its four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Drew Williams singled through the left side to score Justin Santoyo, who reached on an error earlier in the inning. Kaleb Glass followed with a bases-loaded walk that scored Orlando Gonzalez, and then Aiden Proctor hit a high chopper for an infield single to second that scored Garrett Long to give the Bronchos a 3-0 lead.

Glass scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to make it 4-0.

UCO had just five hits in the game. Proctor and Williams had RBI singles. Gonzalez and Glass also got base hits, as did Wyatt Gray. Gonzalez's double was the only extra-base hit of the game for either team.

In the second game Saturday, UCO nearly had another shutout. The Bronchos scored one run in the first and second innings, then two more in the fourth and one in the fifth. Monticello found a way to get two on the board with one out in the ninth to make it 5-2.

Glass scored the first run of the game on a bases-loaded double play groundout in the bottom of the first inning. Proctor made it 2-0 in the second, scoring on Ty Chapman's single to left.

In the fourth, Matt Baughn smacked a double to left center to score Proctor and Ryan Strickland. Then Carpenter launched a solo home run to right field in the fifth to make it 5-0.

Dax Sharp got the start for the Bronchos and had a strong performance. In 7.0 innings of work, the junior transfer from Neosho struck out six batters and allowed only four hits. He issued one walk and hit one batter.

Brady Gilmore threw 1 1/3 out of the bullpen. He gave up the two Monticello runs on two hits and a walk. He did strike out two during his time on the bump. Austin Burda followed in the ninth and got the final two outs of the game.

The Bronchos swept Arkansas Monticello, taking doubleheaders both Friday and Saturday. UCO now turns its attention back on East Central, which was the opening day opponent for the Bronchos. Central Oklahoma won 11-1 over the Tigers in Edmond Feb. 1 and has 15 in a row against ECU since 2012.
