UCO Falls To Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 8) – Central Oklahoma couldn't hold on to an early lead and suffered a tough 5-3 loss to Oklahoma Christian Thursday afternoon at Tom Heath Field.

The Bronchos led 3-1 after four innings, but the Eagles struck for four runs in the fifth and held on. UCO, now 1-4 on the young season, makes its home debut Friday with a 1:30 p.m. contest against Oklahoma Baptist on the first day of the UCO/OC Festival.

"That was a tough loss," head coach Cody White said. "We got off to a decent start and put ourselves in position, but couldn't finish. We just have to regroup and come back tomorrow ready to go."

UCO manufactured  a run in its initial at bat as Rylee Lemos drew a leadoff walk, went to third on Emily Deramus' double to left-center and scored on Jacee Minter's RBI groundout.

The Eagles answered right back in the bottom of the first with a lead-off home run and it stayed 1-1 until the third.

Lemos got things going again with a lead-off infield single and moved over on McKenna Johnson's one-out hit through the left side. Minter followed with a two-run double that made it 3-1.

OC erupted for four runs in the fifth to take the lead, but not without some controversy.

The Eagles got a leadoff single – the first hit Terin Ritz had given up since the first-inning homer – and followed with consecutive bunt singles to load the bases. The second of those was an extremely close play at first and the call held up despite vehement objections from UCO.

Ritz got close to getting out of the jam, notching back-to-back strikeouts before issuing a rare walk. OC followed with a three-run double to left-center to make it 5-3 and the Bronchos weren't able to bounce back.

UCO makes its home debut Friday, hosting No. 22 Oklahoma Baptist at 1:30 p.m. on the first day of the UCO/OC Festival. The Bronchos return to Gerry Pinkston Stadium Saturday to face Southern Nazarene at 1:30 p.m. and Maryville (0-0) at 3:30.
