Bronchos Split Two In Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. – Central Oklahoma split a pair of games in the season-opening Mardi Gras Invitational Sunday, routing Harding in its first game before falling to a late-inning comeback against Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The No. 3-ranked Bronchos rolled over the Lady Bison 10-1 in the opener, then gave up nine runs in the final two innings in dropping a 9-6 decision to the Javelinas.

UCO went 1-3 on the weekend, dropping 2-1 decisions to No. 22 Oklahoma Baptist and perennial powerhouse Augustana Friday before Saturday's contest with Tuskegee was canceled by rain.

"It was a frustrating day," head coach Cody White said. "We played well against a good Harding team and got off to a great start in the second game, but didn't do anything right the last couple of innings.

"We obviously have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be and our girls know that. It's the first weekend of the season and we learned some things about ourselves."

Jacee Minter went 3-for-3 to lead a 12-hit attack in the first-game romp over Harding, which ended after five innings on the eight-run rule.

Minter got the scoring going with a lead-off home run in the top of the second and the senior star added a run-scoring single in the second to make it 2-0. McKenna Johnson had a one-out single and went to second on a groundout before scoring on Minter's hit.

Harding's lone score came on a solo homer in the bottom of the third, but the Bronchos answered back with two in the fourth to go up 4-1 on back-to-back RBI doubles by Rylee Anglen and Rylee Lemos.

UCO broke it open in the fifth, pushing across six runs to go up 10-1.

Emily Deramus opened the inning with a lead-off homer, Minter followed with a single and Terin Ritz's two-run shot quickly made it 7-1. Pinch-runner Brooklyn Ryan scored on a wilk pitch, Lemos added an RBI single and Anglen stole home to push the lead to 10-1.

Ritz earned the pitching win, giving up four hits in the first four innings. Freshman Shelby Beard allowed one hit in finishing up the game in the fifth.

UCO scored two runs in the first, one in the third and two more in the fifth in building a 6-0 lead against TAMUK, but it wasn't enough. The Javelinas got close with four runs in the top of the sixth, then added five more in the seventh to go ahead in pulling off the come-from-behind win.

The Bronchos continued their rugged early-season schedule Thursday with a 4 p.m. contest against No. 16 Oklahoma Christian in Oklahoma City, then OBU at 1:30 p.m. Friday on the first day of the UCO/OC Festival.
