Bronchos Turn Back Missouri Southern

EDMOND (Feb. 3) – Jaden Wells carried the scoring load in the first half before Majok Majouk took over the final 20 minutes in leading Central Oklahoma past Missouri Southern 65-61 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

Wells scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the opening half before Majouk tallied 16 of his season-high 18 points in the final stanza as the Bronchos pulled out the much-needed Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory.

UCO led for almost 35 minutes of the contest, but had to survive some tense moments at the end while nursing a 63-61 lead. The Lions missed a go-ahead 3-point try with 2.4 seconds left and Wells was fouled hauling in the rebound, with the junior sharpshooter draining both free throws to seal the deal.

"We're pretty banged up and I'm thrilled we found a way to get the win," head coach Bob Hoffman said. "It was a battle. Our guys really fought hard and we made just enough plays to get the job done."

Wells went 6-of-12 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and made all nine foul shots in his 23-point outing while adding seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. He moved into fourth place on UCO's career scoring list with 1,660 points.

Majouk made the most of his fourth start of the season. The 6-foot-10 sophomore made 7-of-13 shots with a pair of treys and both free throw attempts in finishing with 18 points to go along with six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Danquez Dawsey scored all eight of his points in the second half and also dished out four assists. Matthew Willenborg chipped in seven big points and Luke Haasl had a game-high eight rebounds along with four points.

UCO looked poised to run the Lions out of the building after building a 28-16 lead with 4:45 left in the half, but MSSU used an 11-2 run to get within 30-27 by intermission.

The Lions stayed close and gained their first lead since the opening minutes of the game at 49-47 and were up 51-49 with 8:39 remaining.

Central responded, with Majouk drilling a 3-pointer from the top of the key and flushing a fast-break dunk to spark an 11-2 surge. That put the Bronchos on top 58-51 and it was 60-52 at the 3:38 mark on Majouk's follow shot.

The lead appeared safe at 63-56 with just 1:10 remaining after two Dawsey free throws, but the Lions hit a quick 3-pointer and then converted a turnover into a layup to get make it 63-61 with 52 seconds left.

UCO missed the front end of a one-and-one at 0:19 to set up the final sequence, with Missouri Southern's 3-point miss and Wells' subsequent free throws finally ending the drama.
