UCO Cruises In Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. – Central Oklahoma beat Nebraska Kearney 87-68 Thursday night to earn its second win in a row in MIAA play.

Central Oklahoma improved to 17-7 on the season with the win and the Bronchos are now 9-7 in the MIAA. UNK is 5-17 on the year and 2-15 in league play.

Jaden Wells led the Bronchos with 23 points. True freshman Jarreth Ingram scored a career-high 21 points and fifth-year senior Jalyn Turner equaled his career high with 15 points.

"I'm proud of the guys tonight for working hard and sticking together," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We had some guys step up tonight and we really needed it. Jet (Ingram) was great tonight. He's going to be really good. Jaden was his usual self and JT (Turner) was big for us too."

Wells has led Central all season and Thursday was no different. The fourth-year junior guard from Hurst, Texas made 7 of 14 shots, including one 3-pointer, and went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Wells added three rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the win.

Ingram, a freshman from Tulsa, Oklahoma, made all seven shots he took Thursday night. That included two 3-pointers. He also went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Ingram added one rebound.

Turner, a fifth-year senior from Houston that played his 139th career game on Thursday, equaled his career high with 15 points. He scored that back in 2021 previously. Turner was 6 of 9 from the floor, 3 of 5 from behind the 3-point line, and he added six rebounds and six assists.

The first seven minutes of Thursday's game was competitive with a little back and forth. Wells hit his lone 3-pointer for the game's first basket to give UCO a 3-0 lead. UNK led 7-5 and by as many as four, 9-5. But when Wells sank a pair of free-throws to give UCO a 13-11 lead, the Bronchos never looked back.

Central had a 6-2 run to pull ahead and later a 9-2 run to take command. The Bronchos led by as many as 11 in the first half and took a 39-29 lead into the halftime break.

UCO cruised through the second half on its way to another league win.

The Bronchos shot 58.5 percent from the floor on Thursday, making 31 of 53 total shots. UCO was 9-for-17 from behind the arc and 16-for-22 from the free-throw line.

Majok Majouk added nine points and three rebounds. Danquez Dawsey added eight points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Matthew Willenborg chipped in seven points to go with six boards. And Caiden Punt added four points to go with two boards.

Central Oklahoma wraps up a short, two-game road trip Saturday at No. 23 Fort Hays State. The Tigers, from Hays, Kansas, beat UCO in Edmond on New Year's Eve and is currently second in the league standings. Tipoff Saturday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
