Central Oklahoma Outduals Southwestern

Bronchos Rally To Earn 4-3 Win Over Longtime Oklahoma Rival

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma rallied late to earn a 4-3 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central improved to 13-2 on the season with the win. The Bulldogs from Weatherford, Oklahoma are now 10-7 on the season. UCO is back in action this weekend with a three-game MIAA series against Missouri Western, beginning Friday evening in Edmond.

"There are some things we didn't like about our offense today, but in the end we did enough to get the win and that's what matters," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We pitched well, and we played defense pretty good, so we'll take it and get ready for the next one."

Southwestern led 1-0 after two innings and 2-0 after three frames, but a big third inning gave UCO a 3-2 lead that held until the eighth. SWOSU got one more in the eighth to tie the game, but another Broncho rally followed in the bottom half as UCO went in front 4-3.

Valek Cisneros got the save for the Bronchos. He gave up a leadoff single in the ninth before getting the next batter to ground into a double play. A jammed up lazy fly ball to second by the next batter ended the game.

Austin Burda picked up the win. He was the fourth pitcher out of the UCO bullpen and threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and one run. He did strike out one batter and was the pitcher in the lineup as UCO took the late lead.

Brady Gilmore got the start for UCO as they used the bullpen for the entire game. He threw 3.0 innings and struck out five batters, nearly matching his season total of six he started the day with. Gilmore gave up the two early runs on four hits.

Chase Yarger followed him out of the pen and threw 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and a walk but no runs. Yarger struck out one batter in the game. Brandon Gomez threw 1 1/3, allowing one hit and two walks, before Burda came on in the seventh.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Justin Santoyo swung on the first pitch he saw and lifted his fourth home run of the season over the fence in left center. Orlando Gonzalez followed with a walk and Ty Chapman singled to no man's land between shortstop and third base and put two runners on with nobody out.

SWOSU made a pitching change before Wyatt Gray's at bat, but Gray didn't mind. He laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position.

Garrett Long was up next and he doubled into center field to score both Gonzalez and Chapman and give UCO the 3-2 lead.

After SWOSU got one back in the eighth to tie the game, the Bronchos had another rally in store.

Chapman led off with a double to left field, and Aiden Proctor pinch-ran for him at second base. Proctor moved to third on a throwing error and then scored when Gray pushed a single through the right side. That gave UCO its final 4-3 lead.

UCO scattered eight hits in the game on Tuesday. Chapman went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored to lead the way. Gray went 2-for-3 with a double. Long went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and the double.

Cameron Uselton added a single in the game and went 1-for-4. Santoyo finished 1-for-4 with the solo homer.

Central Oklahoma returns to MIAA play this weekend. The Bronchos host Missouri Western for a three-game series that begins Friday at 5 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field. The two teams will play Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. to wrap up the series.
