UCO Salvages Weekend With Run-Rule Win At UCM

Ninth-Ranked Bronchos Avoid MIAA Sweep At Third-Ranked Mules

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Oklahoma salvaged the weekend with a 17-7 run-rule victory at Central Missouri in the MIAA series finale Sunday afternoon.

UCO (12-2, 1-2) dropped the first two games at UCM (11-3, 2-1) in the top 10 matchup. The ninth-ranked Bronchos lost 15-2 in seven innings on Friday afternoon before the third-ranked Mules won 6-5 Saturday.

Central Oklahoma led 12-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday and were that close to an early run-rule victory. But the host Mules did go away easily. UCM scored three with one swing of the bat to extend the game to the eighth inning. Then after UCO went in front 17-3 in the top half, UCM answered with four more. The Mules had the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth with a chance to extend the game again before a game-ending fielder's choice.

"I thought the guys have responded well all weekend," UCO head coach John Martin said. "To come back yesterday after the way this weekend started was good to see. Then we let that one slip away, but they came right back today and kept fighting. Those are good things to see in your team. We've got a lot of season ahead of us and this weekend will help us even though we didn't win the series."

Central Oklahoma got a massive performance from redshirt freshman Brett Pense on Sunday as the rookie got more help than he needed from the offense. Pense threw 6.0 innings and picked up the win. He allowed just two hits and no runs to the team that had already put up 21 in the first two games of the series. Pense struck out two batters in the game.

Martin went to Valek Cisneros in the seventh as UCO had a chance to end the game early. Brady Gilmore came on the in the eighth to try and close it out. Then Preston Giltner came on to get the final out as UCM kept pushing back.

Cisneros threw 1 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out one batter. Gilmore got one out via strikeout but walked three batters. Giltner threw two pitches to get the fielder's choice groundout to end the game.

Central Oklahoma scattered 12 hits on Sunday, with six different batters recording at least one. Garrett Long led the Bronchos with three hits. Ty Hammack, Kaleb Glass, Orlando Gonzalez, and Ty Chapman all had two. And Cameron Uselton added one big swing for the 12th hit.

UCO scored in the top of the first inning for the third consecutive game in the series when Uselton grounded out to second, allowing Glass to score and give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Matt Baughn scored Gonzalez on a sacrifice fly to center, then Long scored Chapman with a double to center field. After Glass scored Long on a sac-bunt, UCO led 4-0.

Glass kept his thumbprint on the game in the fourth inning, pelting a triple that scored Baughn. A throwing error on the play allowed Glass to score himself and the two-run play gave UCO a 6-0 lead.

In the fifth, Uselton recorded his only hit of the game on a leadoff solo home run to left field. Long followed with a sac-fly that scored Justin Santoyo, and Hammack belted a three-run homer to left that scored Gonzalez and Chapman and gave UCO an 11-0 lead.

Long scored Chapman again with a double to left in the seventh inning to give UCO the 12-0 lead.

After UCM finally got on the board and extended the game to the eighth inning, the Broncho offense came back with more firepower.

Gonzalez singled to center field to score Carson Carpenter and Uselton. That made it 14-3. Then Chapman doubled to left and scored Santoyo, and Long singled to center to score Gonzalez and Chapman. UCO led 17-3 going to the bottom of the eighth.

Central Missouri had one last punch before UCO ended the game early with the 10-run lead after seven innings.

Central Oklahoma returns to Edmond for a four-game homestand. UCO will host Southwestern Oklahoma State in a midweek non-conference game Tuesday at Wendell Simmons Field, then Missouri Western for a three-game MIAA series beginning Friday evening.
