No. 11 UCO Routs Bulldogs

EDMOND (Feb. 18) – Jacee Minter and McKenna Johnson drove in three runs apiece as Central Oklahoma brushed past Southwestern Oklahoma 9-1 Sunday evening at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The No. 11-ranked Bronchos hammered three home runs for the second straight game in completing a sweep of No. 23 Southern Arkansas and the Bulldogs on the final day of the Raising Cane's Festival.

Minter, Tatum Long and Shayleigh Odom all went deep for UCO, which improved to 7-5 on the season. The Bronchos don't return to action until going to Southern Nazarene for a Feb. 27 doubleheader.

"We swung the bats well today," said head coach Cody White, whose team had 24 hits – including 13 for extra bases -- on the day. "I was really proud of the how focused we were in both games and I thought we played extremely hard.

"That's what we have to keep doing. Nothing is going to be given to us, so we just have to keep grinding and keep working to get better. That's the only way we can reach our full potential."

Emily Deramus went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead UCO's 11-hit attack, while Minter and Johnson each had two hits. Terin Ritz picked up the pitching win, giving up five hits without a walk and striking out four in the first five innings.

The Bronchos jumped on top early, going ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Rylee Lemos was hit by pitch to start the inning and Ritz walked before Johnson came through with a two-out, two-run double to left-center field.

The Bulldogs tallied their lone run in the top of the third, but UCO answered with two in its half of the inning. Lemos led off with a double to right-center, Deramus followed with an infield hit and Minter had an RBI groundout before Johnson made it 4-1 with a run-scoring single through the left side.

Central went deep twice in extending its cushion to 7-1 in the fourth. Long opened the inning with a first-pitch bomb to center field, Layne Smith walked and then Odom smashed a deep fly to center on the first pitch she saw for a two-run shot.

Minter made it 8-1 in the fifth when she led off with her fifth homer of the season, this one a moon shot to center, and the senior standout ended the game in the sixth with her third RBI of the game.

Deramus ripped a one-out double to right-center in that inning, Ritz walked and then Minter smacked a single to left field to plate Deramus and end the game. Minter also gave the Bronchos their walk-off 10-2 run-rule win in the opener against SAU with a three-run homer.
