Bronchos Bounce Back To Earn Split With SNU

BETHANY, Okla. (Feb. 27) – Jacee Minter continued her early-season home run barrage with a trio of bombs in leading Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader split with Southern Nazarene Tuesday afternoon at wind-blown Tere Webber Field.

Minter belted one homer in a 7-5 first-game loss before launching two more in a bounce-back 14-7 second-game win. The senior standout has eight homers on the season and 42 for her illustrious career, which is tied for third on UCO's all-time list.

The No. 12-ranked Bronchos – playing their first game in eight days -- blew an early 4-0 lead in dropping the opener, then overcame five errors in taking the nightcap to move to 8-6 on the year.

"It was a weird day," head coach Cody White said. "We got off to a great start in the first game, then left too many pitches up in the zone that SNU took advantage of. You can't do that on a windy day against a team that can swing the bats like they can.

"I thought we did a good job putting that behind us to get ready for the second game. We hit the ball well, but our defense was sloppy and that hurt us. There's a lot of things we need to clean up moving forward."

The Bronchos jumped all over SNU ace Janie Worthington in the first inning of the opener, blasting a pair of homers to grab a quick 4-0 lead. It didn't last long, however, as the Crimson Storm erupted for seven runs in the second and UCO managed just one score in its final six offensive tries.

Rylee Lemos opened the game with an infield single and Emily Deramus drew a walk before Terin Ritz slammed a massive shot over the scoreboard in left field. Minter followed with a solo rocket to center field and the Bronchos seemed to be rolling.

But SNU answered back in the second, scoring seven runs on six hits and a pair of walks to surge in front and UCO didn't respond.

UCO made it 7-5 in the third when Tatum Long ripped a one-out double to left field and Shayleigh Odom came through with a two-out RBI double. The Bronchos couldn't take advantage of a couple of scoring chances to rest of the way and SNU held on to end a nine-game losing streak in the series.

Minter and Rylee Anglen had two hits apiece to lead a nine-hit attack. Freshman Shelby Beard pitched well in relief, giving up one run on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts in a season-high 4.2-inning outing.

Ritz gave UCO a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game in unique fashion, drawing a two-out walk and then scoring on three consecutive wild pitches. The Crimson Storm tied it with an unearned run in the second.

The Bronchos took control in the third, exploding for eight runs to go up 9-1.

Deramus got the inning started with a lead-off double to left field, Ritz walked and Minter drove a pitch off the foul pole in left field for a three-run homer. McKenna Johnson kept it going with a bloop single, Long walked and Odom drove an RBI double to left.

Long scored on a wild pitch, Anglen reached on an error that allowed Odom to score and Ritz finished the scoring with a two-run double off the left field fence.

SNU scored once in the bottom of the inning, then answered a UCO score in the fifth with five runs – four of them unearned – to get within 10-7.

The Bronchos put the game away with a four-run burst in the seventh.

Anglen drew a one-out walk and Lemos followed with an RBI double to left before Deramus roped a line-drive homer to center. Minter followed an out later by parking her third homer of the day far over the center field fence.

UCO finished with 13 hits, getting three apiece from Deramus and Johnson while Minter and Lemos both had two. Ritz went the distance in the circle, allowing just two earned runs while not issuing a walk.

UCO goes back on the road this weekend, traveling to Springfield, Mo. for four games in the two-day Drury Classic.
