Central Oklahoma Beats OC To Improve To 10-0 On The Season

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma rode an early lead to its 10th consecutive victory to start the 2024 season Saturday afternoon as the 20th-ranked Bronchos continued their impressive play.

Central Oklahoma 4, Oklahoma Christian 3.

"We think we could have done more on offense, but it was tough out there today and we ended up with the win, so we'll take that," UCO head coach John Martin said. "Our pitching did a great job today. We would have liked to not make it as close as it was in the end, but we found a way to get it done and now we'll try to do it again tomorrow."

UCO and OC are playing a weekend, two-game home-and-home series. After Saturday's game in Edmond, the Bronchos will travel 3.5 miles south to OC's campus in Oklahoma City for the second game.

Saturday, Caleb Burchfield got the start for the Bronchos and the senior right-hander was solid in four innings of work. Burchfield gave up just one hit and struck out two batters. He didn't issue a walk and hit one batter, allowing just two base runners on the day.

Brett Pense came on in the fifth to relieve Burchfield, and he was just as good in three innings of work. Pense picked up the win to improve to 3-0 on the year – and in his career. The redshirt freshman from Edmond struck out four batters.

Pense did allow three runs on four hits and two walks, with a late rally prompting another pitching change. Pense got two outs in the eighth, but was relieved by Austin Burda for the final out of the inning.

Valek Cisneros came on in the ninth and struck out the side on 13 pitches to earn his third save of the season.

Central scored twice in the fourth and twice in the fifth to get all the offense it needed on Saturday.

Cameron Uselton scored on a groundout by Drew Williams, and then Justin Santoyo, who moved to third, scored after that on a failed pickoff attempt.

Wyatt Gray got across in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Carson Carpenter, and Uselton's triple in the fifth scored Garrett Long to make it 4-0 UCO.

Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian are scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch Sunday.
