UCO Improves To 11-0 With Sweep of OC

Bronchos Off To Best Start In School History

OKLAHOMA CITY – Central Oklahoma improved to 11-0 in 2024 with a weekend sweep of Oklahoma Christian, finishing off the two-day, home and home series with a 16-6 win Sunday at OC's Dobson Field.

The Bronchos, which won 4-3 in Edmond on Saturday, improved to 11-0 for the first time in recorded history. While the baseball program has competed since before 1900, records dating back to 1960 include only one season (2008) in which Central went 10-0.

"That's a neat thing to say and to talk about, but we care only about how we finish," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We've been fortunate in the first three weeks, but there's more than three months left in the season. We've got a long way to go.

"We did good today," Martin continued. "Our offense got it going and kept the pressure on them all day. While we don't like to give up so much at once, we didn't let it affect us and we got the win."

Sunday, Central Oklahoma scored early and often in continuing its winning ways. The Bronchos plated three in the first inning, another in the second, then four in the third inning. The Bronchos added two, one, and two in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, and then for good measure, three more in the top of the ninth.

Carson Carpenter bookended the day for the Bronchos. The junior right-fielder belted a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. He managed another RBI on a groundout in the seventh, but then belted a second three-run home run in top of the ninth to get to seven RBIs on the day.

Carpenter, Kaleb Glass, Cameron Uselton, Ryan Strickland, Wyatt Gray, and Garret Long all had two hits in the game. Justin Santoyo added one more.

Glass went 2-for-5 with a triple and three runs scored. Uselton went 2-for-6 with an RBI. Strickland went 2-for-6 with a solo home run. Gray went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. And Long went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Santoyo went 1-for-4 and also had a double to give UCO eight extra-base hits in the game.

Central conceded six runs to Oklahoma Christian on Sunday and they all came early. Preston Giltner started for the Bronchos and all six runs were charged to the junior right-hander. He threw 2 2/3 innings and gave up six hits. He did strikeout two on the day.

Brady Gilmore followed him in the third and struck out two while giving up one hit. He finished after 1 1/3 innings of work.

Justin Smith and Austin Burda both threw two innings, and Brandon Gomez threw one from that point on and the trio held OC hitless the rest of the way.

Smith walked five batters, but kept OC off the board. Burda got through two clean innings and picked up the win for his efforts. Gomez struck out one and got the final three outs of the game.

Central Oklahoma will now turn its attention to another longtime Oklahoma foe in Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Savage Storm will make its way from Durant, Oklahoma to Edmond for a midweek non-conference clash Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
