UCO Falls At Buzzer Again

Central Oklahoma Drops 71-69 Contest With Pittsburg State

EDMOND – Jaden Wells missed a buzzer beater for the second time in three games Thursday night against Pittsburg State in an MIAA battle at Hamilton Field House.

Pitt State 71, Central 69.

"We had a chance in the end," UCO head men's coach Bob Hoffman said. "We should've done a better job earlier in the game. I should have done a better job. But we fought like heck to get back in the game and we had a chance in the end."

Central Oklahoma had a 2-0 lead and never led again. But down the stretch, the Bronchos had a chance.

Wells made a layup with 2:39 to play to cut it to two, 68-66. Then he made two free-throws to tie the game with 51 seconds left, 68-68. Pittsburg State made the second of two free-throws to go in front 69-68, then UCO got another chance. Matthew Willenborg was fouled under the rim and made one of two at the line to tie the game, 69-69.

Pitt State got a layup with five seconds left to take the lead for good. Wells got an inbounds pass, dribbled to the right of the top of the key and launched a good look, but couldn't get the game-winning basket.

Central Oklahoma fell to 15-7 on the season with the loss and the Bronchos are now 7-7 in league play. UCO hosts Missouri Southern Saturday in another league showdown.

Wells scored the first basket of the game, but Pitt State tied it moments later, then took a 4-2 lead. Danquez Dawsey put in two free-throws to tie the game, 4-4, but then the visiting Gorillas soon led 16-4 after a 12-0 run that spanned 3:35 in the early part of the game.

Central never led again in the first half and could only manage to get the deficit down to five points. The Bronchos did that on four different occasions down the first-half stretch. UCO trailed 41-32 at halftime.

In the second half, UCO cut it to five again, for the sixth time, before getting a stop and a jumper by Wells to get it down to three with just over five minutes left to play. After getting another stop, Wells earned a pair of free-throws to cut it one point, 60-59, with just under five minutes.

Wells led the Bronchos with 27 points. He was 7-for-23 from the floor, 1-for-8 from behind the arc, and 12-for-13 from the free-throw line. Wells added six rebounds and two steals. With his 27, he moved up to a tie for fifth place on Central Oklahoma's all-time scoring list, joining Alex Wright (1991-93) with 1,637 career points.

Dawsey chipped in 15 points, four assists and two rebounds. He went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Mike Quick Jr. scored 11 points to give UCO three in double figures.

The Bronchos shot 40.7 percent overall and 17.6 percent from behind the arc, going 3-for-17 from outside including an 0-for-8 line in the second half. The Bronchos were 22-for-30 at the line Thursday.

Luke Haasl added four points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots. Preston Aymond and Willenborg scored three points, and Jalyn Turner, Jarreth Ingram, and Majok Majouk each scored two points.
