No. 11 UCO Uses Balanced Offense To Topple Gorillas

Addison Wimmer, Jenna Karp and Sydney Huck All Had 10-plus Kills

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Three players had double-digit kills and Central Oklahoma shrugged off a first-set loss to topple MIAA rival Pittsburg State Friday night.

The No. 11-ranked Bronchos fell 25-19 in the opening set before coming back to claim 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 victories in the next three. UCO improved to 24-2 on the season and remained second in the league standings behind Nebraska-Kearney at 11-2.

Central has three matches left in the regular season, starting with a 3 p.m. contest Saturday at Newman. The Bronchos finish at home next weekend against Washburn and Emporia State.

"It was a good road win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We got off to a slow start, but I was proud of the way we bounced back. Our offense was really balanced tonight and we played with good energy."

Addison Wimmer had a sensational all-around performance to lead UCO. The senior outside hitter knocked down 13 kills to go along with 20 digs and a career-high five blocks (three solo, two assisted).

Jenna Karp had 12 kills and two assisted blocks, while Sydney Huck hit .429 with 11 kills and two errors in 21 attacks to go along with two solo blocks. Lari Migliorino chipped in nine kills and three blocks and Mikaela Garvin added seven kills with two blocks.

Lindsey Houran once again directed the offensive attack, finishing with 45 assists.  Katie Le dug up a team-high 22 attacks, moving into sixth place on UCO's career digs list with 1,521.

The Gorillas pulled away from a 14-all tie to earn the first-set win, but Central responded.

UCO trailed 15-14 in the second set before getting a Garvin block and Migliorino kill in a 4-0 run to take the lead for good at 18-15. PSU was within 23-22 late, but the Bronchos closed in out on back-to-back kills by Wimmer and Garvin.

Karp knocked down two kills during a 5-0 spurt that snapped a 5-5 deadlock and put Central on top 10-5 in the third set. It was close at 18-16 before the Bronchos reeled off four unanswered points to pull away.

The final set was tied at 12 when Garvin slammed down consecutive kills, Karp followed with another and an attack error put UCO ahead 16-12. Wimmer took over the rest of the way, collecting two kills and two solo blocks as the Bronchos finished off the win.
