UCO Cruises Past Hornets In MIAA Tourney

Sizzling Offensive Attack Leads Bronchos Past Emporia State

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – A blistering offensive attack led No. 9-ranked Central Oklahoma to a sweep of Emporia State in the first round of the MIAA Volleyball Championship Thursday afternoon at Civic Arena.

The Bronchos committed a mere three errors in 107 attacks while knocking down 47 kills in hitting a sizzling .411. Third-seeded UCO improved to 28-2 in moving into Friday's 5 p.m. semifinals against No. 2 seed Missouri Western, which beat Central Missouri in four sets.

"Our offense was very efficient today," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We made a lot of great swings and beat a good team. It was a great win for us and now we have to turn our focus on tomorrow."

MIAA Player of the Year Addison Wimmer collected a match-high 14 attacks with a .333 attack percentage while adding nine digs to pace UCO's offensive assault. Three veterans hit .529 or better and made no errors between them – Jenna Karp (.636) with seven kills, Sydney Huck (.588) with 10 kills and Lari Migliorino (.529) with nine kills.

Karp added five blocks (two solo, three assisted) and Huck three (two solo, one assisted). Mikaela Garvin added two more solo blocks in addition to hitting .385 with six kills.

Setter Lindsey Houran directed UCO's offensive success, dishing out 37 assists to go along with 13 digs. Riley Roberts came up big in the back row with 13 digs.

The Bronchos never trailed in the first set after Garvin's opening kill. It was tied at 3-3, but Karp and Garvin had solo blocks in a 6-1 run that made it 9-4 and UCO wasn't tested the rest of the way.

It was much the same in the second set. Migliorino smashed down a kill to open it, Karp followed with a block and Garvin's dart gave Central a quick 3-0 lead.

The Hornets were still within three points at 11-8 before the Bronchos broke it open with six unanswered points behind three Huck kills. That made it 17-8 and UCO coasted in from there.

Emporia tried to stay alive in the third set that was close most of the way. The Bronchos turned a 7-6 deficit into an 11-7 lead as Huck had a kill, a solo block and an assisted block with Karp.

UCO appeared on its way to another easy win after pushing its advantage to 15-9, but the Hornets got within 18-17. An ESU error and Huck kill started a 7-2 spurt that finished off the set and closed out the sweep.
