Bronchos Headed To MIAA Championship

Central Oklahoma Beats Missouri Western In Five-Set Thriller

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western slugged it out on the court Friday night and it was the Bronchos who came away with a 3-2 victory in the MIAA Volleyball Championship Semifinal.

UCO (29-2) won the first set but needed to rally from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two and punch its ticket to the league's championship match for the first time since 2015.

"We were good all around," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "It took a team effort on both offense and defense. The team really rallied together to get it done. We're not done yet, and it's going to take all of us once more tomorrow."

Central Oklahoma won 25-21 before dropping consecutive 25-20 frames. Another 25-21 victory forced the fifth set. That was as tight as the first four.

There were seven lead changes in the final frame and the set was tied 10 times. Three straight points by MWSU gave the local Griffons a 13-11 lead and put UCO on the ropes, but the Bronchos rattled off the final four points to win the match.

Lari Migliorino landed a kill, Jenna Karp and Sydney Huck teamed up for back-to-back blocks, and then Karp finished it off with a kill that gave UCO the 15-13 advantage and trip to Saturday's championship.

UCO will play Nebraska Kearney in the final Saturday at 6 p.m. The Lopers (30-1) have won 10 in a row since a loss to the Bronchos Oct. 19 in Edmond.

Migliorino turned back 13 Missouri Western attacks, with her 11 block-assists tied for the third-most in a single game in school history. The junior middle blocker had nine kills while hittng .368 on the night to go with the two solo blocks.

Karp and MIAA Player of the Year Addison Wimmer led the offense with 14 kills each. Huck, Mikaela Garvin, and Migliorino each had nine kills in the well distributed effort.

Linsey Houran set it all up. The junior dished out 43 assists and was key on the back row as one of three Bronchos with more than 20 digs.

Houran finished with 21, libero Katie Le had 22 digs, and Wimmer was key with 28 digs to go with her 14 kills.

Central Oklahoma came out swinging and hit .233 in the first set to land 16 kills and take the early lead in the match. The Bronchos didn't get as much in the second, though UCO did land 14 kills, Central hit .106 and had nine errors.

The Bronchos did it with defense in the third while hitting .024 and only six kills, Central forced 11 errors by Missouri Western to put up a fight.

The Bronchos came back with a fourth-set win thanks to 14 kills in the frame and put it away with eight kills and seven MWSU errors in the fifth set.

The defense held Missouri Western to a meager .149 hitting percentage for the match.

Central Oklahoma and Nebraska Kearney play at 6 p.m. Saturday. The winner receives the league's automatic qualification to the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship that begins with the Central Regional December 5-7.
