Adam Dorrel Named AFCA Regional Coach of the Year

Central Oklahoma Head Football Coach Led Team To MIAA Title In Third Season

WACO, Texas – UCO head football coach Adam Dorrel was named Regional Coach of the Year Tuesday by the American Football Coaches Association.

The third-year head coach at Central led the Bronchos to a 10-1 season and an MIAA title.

Dorrel joins four other regional winners in Division II. Jim Clements (Kutztown), Tremaine Jackson (Valdosta State), Todd Knight (Ouachita Baptist), and Jerry Olszewski (Augustana) also earned the honor.

Dorrel and Knight will face off in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Division II Football Championship in Edmond this Saturday as the Bronchos and the Tigers from Arkadelphia, Ark. meet at Chad Richison Stadium in Edmond at 1 p.m.

Tuesday's award marks the second time Dorrel has been named Regional Coach of the Year. He previously earned the honor in 2016 while at Northwest Missouri.

The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the association's five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, and NAIA. The winners are selected by active members of the association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions. This year's winners will be honored in January during the 2025 AFCA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Regional coaches of the year are also advanced to the ballot for National Coach of the Year, to be announced Dec. 16.

Dorrel was hired at Central Oklahoma and went 6-5 during his first season in 2022. He followed with a 5-6 record last fall. In those two years, Dorrel was 9-2 at home and 2-9 on the road. This fall however, Dorrel went 5-1 at home and 5-0 on the road in leading the Bronchos to an MIAA Championship and the first playoff appearance for Central since 2003.
