Bronchos Fall Short In Battle With West Texas

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma ended up on the wrong side of a hard-fought decision against No. 3 West Texas A&M Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos dropped their first contest of the season and a 2-1 following the non-conference game. WTAMU improved to 4-0 with the win.

"We had a chance," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "They made some big plays at the end of the game and we had some good chances, but didn't get the shots to fall."

UCO trailed 74-73 with 2:25 remaining in the game, but an untimely 8-0 run by West Texas put it away. A nearly 40-foot 3-pointer as the shot clock expired seemed to be the dagger at the end. The 95-second stretch made it 82-73 with just 50 seconds remaining in the game.

Israel Hart led Central Oklahoma with 25 points. The senior guard went 7-for-16 from the floor, 2-for-5 from behind the arc, and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. He added four assists, two rebounds, and one steal.

Luke Haasl and JV Seat both scored 13 points, and Jordan Thompson added 10. Matthew Willenborg, who scored nine, added a team-high 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Haasl pulled down eight rebounds too.

Jacobi Sebock scored five points and Parker Hannah had three to round out the scoring for the Bronchos. UCO got 66 points from its starters to 12 off the bench.

Central Oklahoma shot 42.4 percent from the floor as a team, making 25 of 59 total shots. The Bronchos were 7-for-21 from behind the arc and went 21-for-29 from the free-throw line.

West Texas shot 43.8 percent overall, made 7 of 22 threes, and went 22-for-30 at the line, posting nearly similar numbers shooting the basketball.

Thursday night's contest featured 13 lead changes and the matchup was tied 10 different times as the two strong programs battled it out on the hardwood.

The first half alone had seven ties and six lead changes. West Texas jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but that was its biggest advantage of the half. Central used a 12-0 run late in the half to take the game from 32-29 WT to 41-32 UCO.

Thursday was the third straight game to start the season where UCO put together a run of at least 12-0.

Central led 41-34 at halftime.

UCO held its lead at seven points on three different occasions in the second half before the game tightened up for most of the middle part of the half.

WT got it down to one point at the 14:57 mark, then it remained a one-possession game for the next 5:52. The visiting Buffaloes from Canyon, Texas stretched their lead up to nine, 70-61, before the Bronchos rallied again.

Central put together a 12-4 run over a four-minute stretch to get it back down to one point. Seat made 1 of 2 two free-throws to make it 74-73 before WT's final rally put the game away.

Central Oklahoma has a week off before traveling to Southwestern Oklahoma State Thursday, Nov. 21 for its next outing. The Bronchos return to Hamilton Field House on Sunday, Nov. 24 to take on Science & Arts.
