Lady Lions Stun No. 10 UCO

Bronchos Have 15-Match Home Winning Streak Snapped

EDMOND – Mistake-prone Central Oklahoma couldn't get out of its own way and dropped a shocking four-set decision to MIAA rival Arkansas-Fort Smith Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 10-ranked Bronchos committed a season-high 33 attack errors in hitting a season-low .140 while also tying a season high for service errors with 10. It added up to a 24-26, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23 upset for the Lady Lions, who entered the night having lost five straight.

UCO – which dropped just one set in its first eight home matches this season had a 15-match home winning streak snapped in falling to 20-2 overall and 7-2 in the league. The Bronchos will have a chance to get back at UAFS (12-9, 4-5) quickly as the two teams meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. in Fort Smith, Ark.

"We weren't ready to play and that that's disappointing," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Too many mistakes, both mental and physical. It's hard to beat any team when you give them 43 points, but we still had our chances and just couldn't get it done."

The Bronchos jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first set and looked ready to cruise, but UAFS battled back to tie it at 16-all before surging in front 22-18. Then it was UCO's turn to rally.

Mikaela Garvin and Lari Migliorino teamed up for a block and Sydney Huck soared for an emphatic kill to spark a 5-1 run that put the Bronchos on top 23-22. Two more Huck kills and a Lady Lion miscue enabled UCO to prevail.

The Bronchos pulled out the first set despite tallying nine attack errors and the misfires continued to pile up the rest of the way.

The Lady Lions had a commanding 18-9 lead in the second set before fending off a UCO comeback try in evening the match, then used a late rally of their own to take the third set.

Central was up 16-11 in the third after a Mikiah Perdue kill and then found itself trailing 20-19. Kills by Huck and Mikaela Garvin along with a Huck ace gave the Bronchos a 23-21 lead, but UAFS finished with a 5-1 run to steal the win.

The Lady Lions led most of the fourth set, with another last-ditch rally giving UCO a chance to extend the match. Huck had four kills in a 8-2 spurt that put the Bronchos up 23-20, but UAFS responded with five unanswered points to complete the upset.

Huck finished with 18 kills and 10 digs to lead UCO. Garvin finished with 11 kills, while Perdue and Jenna Karp had nine each and Addison Wimmer eight.

Lindsey Houran handed out 55 assists in directing the offense. Katie Le dug up 23 attacks and Riley Roberts had a career-high 22 digs in pacing the defense.
