It's A Block Party As UCO Rejects Lopers

Bronchos Dominate At The Net In Upset Of UNK

EDMOND – An impenetrable line of defense at the net propelled No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma to a stunning sweep of No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon in a key MIAA showdown at Hamilton Feld House.

The Bronchos scored a season-high 15 points off blocks, with five players combining for five solo and 20 assisted rejections. It added up to a 25-19, 25-22, 25-22 triumph over the previously unbeaten Lopers.

"We haven't blocked like that all season and it was obviously the difference today," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I'm really proud of my team for the way they played today. We were locked in the whole match and beat a great Kearney team. It's a huge win for us."

Both teams are now 20-1 on the season, with UNK at 8-1 in the league standings and the UCO 7-1. The Bronchos are back in action Wednesday, hosting new MIAA rival Arkansas-Fort Smith at 6 p.m. to wrap up a three-match homestand.

Mikaela Garvin led the way Saturday. The senior middle blocker hit .423 with 14 kills and three errors in 26 attacks while also blocking a season-high six shots (two solo, four assisted).

Sydney Huck hit .333 with 13 kills and two miscues in 33 attempts to go along with three assisted blocks and Addison Wimmer had 11 kills with 15 digs.

Jenna Karp knocked down seven kills while also recording two solo and four assisted blocks, moving into seventh place on UCO's career list for solo blocks with 72. Lari Migliorino joined the block party, notching a career-high seven rejections (one solo, six assisted) with three kills.

Lindsey Houran handed out 45 assists and also had three assisted blocks, with Katie Le digging up 21 UNK attacks in another stellar defensive outing. The senior libero moved into 10th place on the school's career digs list with 1,422.

Garvin and Huck sparked the first-set win with a variety of unstoppable kills. The left-handed Garvin smashed down Houran's first set to start an opening 4-0 run that ended on Huck's bullet down the middle and the Bronchos never trailed.

The  Lopers got close at 9-7, but kills by Garvin and Huck along with a Garvin/Migliorino block keyed a 4-0 spurt that made it 13-7 and UCO wasn't pushed the rest of the way.

It was a battle throughout the second set, with 14 ties and seven lead changes. The Bronchos led 19-16 after an attack error, but UNK ripped off four unanswered points to surge in front at 20-19 and was up again at 21-20.

Wimmer took over down the stretch.

The senior outside hitter soared for back-to-back kills to put UCO on top for good, then Houran served up an ace to make it 23-21. An error cut the lead to 23-22, then Wimmer hit another winner – her sixth of the set -- and Migliorino came up with a solo block to close it out.

It was another back-and-forth struggle in the third set with 12 ties and nine lead changes as the Lopers looked to extend the match But the Bronchos had other plans.

UNK led 18-17 before Garvin's rocket down the middle and a Garvin/Migliorino block put Central ahead to stay. Another Garvin smash made it 20-18, then  Huck and Karp followed a Loper score with back-to-back kills to up the lead to 22-19.

A bad set made it 23-19 and Garvin's solo rejection followed a UNK score to make it 24-20. The Lopers scored two straight to get within 24-22, but an attack error ended the drama and completed the UCO sweep.
