Bronchos Tame The Tigers

No. 13 UCO Rolls Past Fort Hays State For 12th Sweep

EDMOND – Sydney Huck hammered down eight of her match-high 15 kills in the opening set and No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma cruised past MIAA foe Fort Hays State Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos trailed only once all night – that at 1-0 in the first set – in a 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 sweep. UCO improved to 19-1 on the season and 6-1 in league play with its 16th straight win over the Tigers, who fell to 9-8 and 1-7.

"We did a good job setting the tone at the start of each set," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Unfortunately we seemed to have a little letdown every time, but did enough to get the job done. We have a huge match coming up Saturday and will need to play much better."

The Bronchos are home again at 1 p.m. Saturday for a showdown against unbeaten and No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney, the conference leader at 19-0 and 7-0.

Huck hit .312 on the night with 15 kills and five errors in 32 attacks to lead UCO. The junior outside hitter also had a big presence at the net with six total blocks (one solo, five assisted).

Jenna Karp hit .318 with 10 kills and three miscues in 22 attempts to go along with three blocks (one solo, two assisted). Mikaela Garvin chipped in seven kills with a solo block and Lari Migliorino hit .462 with six kills in 13 attacks while adding four assisted blocks.

Brynn Egger came off the bench to chip in four kills and a pair of rejections (one solo, one assisted). Lindsey Houran had another stellar all-around outing with 34 assists, 10 digs and two kills. Katie Le contributed 21 digs and Riley Roberts 10.

FHSU's only lead of the match came at 1-0 off a Central error, but the Bronchos rebounded quickly with seven unanswered points. Huck had a pair of kills and teamed with Migliorino for two blocks in that stretch.

The Tigers used a late rally to get within 23-21, but a Garvin kill and combined block by Huck and Karp finished off the set.

The Bronchos bolted to another 7-1 lead in the second set as Garvin had a pair of kills and then fended off an FHSU comeback try. The Tigers got within 14-12 before Huck and Karp each had a kill and teamed up for a block in a 4-0 run that made it 18-12.

UCO coasted in from there and then started strong again in the third set, grabbing a quick 6-1 advantage. Fort Hays never got close than four the rest of way and the Bronchos closed out their 12th sweep of the season.

Central Oklahoma is offering free admission Saturday to fans wearing UCO gear for the 1 p.m. showdown with third-ranked Kearney.
