Bronchos Roll Over CSU-Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. (Jan. 27) – Garrett Steidley got Central Oklahoma off to a quick start and the Bronchos never let up in overpowering Colorado State-Pueblo 40-3 Saturday night.

Steidley's first-period technical fall in the opening match at 125 pounds was one of six bonus-point wins for top-ranked UCO, which stayed perfect against the Thunderwolves (22-0) with its most lopsided rout of the series.

The Bronchos got pins from 141 Dylan Lucas and 184 Garrett Wells, while 174 Anthony DesVigne and Hvy Shawn Streck had technical falls and 165 Hunter Jump a major decision.

UCO held a 24-2 takedown advantage in moving to 11-0 with its 18th win in a row. The Bronchos, who beat Adams State 28-12 Friday night, have won 43 of their last 44 duals.

"We wrestled better tonight," head coach Todd Steidley said. "I thought our guys came out aggressive and stayed that way. We did a good job of staying on the attack and keeping them on their heels.

"It's never easy to go on the road, but I was proud of our guys for staying focused on what we needed to do this weekend."

Steidley made an opening statement that this wouldn't be CSU-Pueblo's night, striking for a quick takedown and then adding a trio of four-point near-falls to make it 15-0 in ending it at the 2:48 mark.

Peter Rolle followed with a 6-4 victory and the fourth-ranked Lucas kept the early onslaught going, scoring an early takedown before notching his fourth fall of the season with 40 seconds left in the opening period.

Dylan Brown had a pair of takedowns in a 7-0 shutout at 149, then third-ranked Gabe Johnson prevailed in a tight 4-2 battle behind a first-period takedown.

Jump came through late in notching his major decision, getting a takedown with 16 seconds left and adding a riding time point for an 8-0 shutout. DesVigne followed with a dominating performance, tallying four takedowns and a near-fall in a 16-1 thrashing.

The fifth-ranked Wells turned the last of his four takedowns into a fall at the 6:18 mark to push UCO's lead to 35-0 before the Thunderwolves got their lone win at 197 when Ben Gould scored five third-period points to trim backup Emmanuel Skillings 8-6.

Top-ranked Shawn Streck ended the night with a 20-5 pummeling that ended early in the second period. The defending national champion had six takedowns in taking an 18-5 lead after the first period, then got a reverse nine seconds into the second for his seventh technical fall in a 9-0 start.

The Bronchos return home on Sunday, Feb. 4, hosting No. 21 Central Missouri at 2 p.m. on Legends Day. The 1983-84 and 1993-94 national championship teams will be recognized during intermission and a reception for all alumni will be held after the dual.
