Central Oklahoma Overpowers Newman

Bronchos Win MIAA Road Game To Snap Rare Losing Streak

WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma never trailed in an 86-77 MIAA road win Saturday at Newman. The Bronchos snapped a rare three-game losing streak with the victory and improved to 15-6 on the season and 7-6 in the MIAA.

"The guys did a good job today of fighting for it," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "Newman is a good team and they are so fast and have good scorers. The guys did a good job of fighting through it and coming together and thank goodness we're back in the win column.

Jaden Wells led all scorers with 26 points, going 8-for-21 from the floor, 2-for-11 from behind the arc, and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. He added five steals and five rebounds. Mike Quick Jr. added a 20-point game, finishing with 21 points on 4 of 7 shooting, including 2 of 3 from outside. Quick Jr. was big on the line, going 11-for-14 at the stripe Saturday.

Danquez Dawsey also scored in double figures, putting up 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Jalyn Turner and Preston Aymond both scored eight points, Luke Haasl added six, and Caiden Punt chipped in two points.

Central shot 47.9 percent in the game, making 23 of 48 shots. The Bronchos were 7-for-20 from behind the arc and 33-for-40 at the free-throw line.

UCO never trailed in the first half, though there were three ties. The last one came at 35-35 with just over four minutes left in the opening half, but an 11-4 run to end the half gave Central a 46-39 lead at the break.

The Bronchos shot 48.4 percent in the first half, making 15 of 31 shots. UCO hit 5 of 14 from behind the 3-point line, a 35.7 percent mark. Central was aided by an 11-for-15 mark from the free-throw line to bolster the offense. Newman shot 50 percent (12-for-24) in the first half. The Bronchos forced 10 Newman turnovers and swiped seven steals in the opening 20 minutes.

Newman opened the second half with a 6-0 run to get the game back to one possession. The game stayed close for most of the half from there, with 5-0 runs back and forth by both teams. Newman got it to one, 55-54, before UCO called a timeout. Then the Bronchos added a 6-0 run.

When UCO made a 7-0 run, spanning nearly three minutes of game time, Newman never recovered. Quick Jr. made a 3-pointer, then converted one free-throw, and Wells added another 3-pointer going into the under-5 media timeout. Central led by two or more possessions from that point on.

Central Oklahoma played 5 of 7 games in January on the road. The Bronchos return to Hamilton Field House to begin the month of February next weekend.
