No. 1 Bronchos Travel To Colorado For Two Duals

Central Oklahoma puts a lengthy winning streak on the line this weekend when the top-ranked Bronchos journey to Colorado to take on a pair of longtime NCAA Division II rivals.

UCO, 9-0 this season, has won 16 straight duals and 41 of its last 42. The Bronchos start the weekend Friday in Alamosa against Adams State (4-1) before moving on to Pueblo Saturday to face Colorado State-Pueblo (5-3).

Match-time both nights is 7 p.m. (Oklahoma time).

"It's a long trip and we know it will be a hostile environment both nights," said head coach Todd Steidley, now 95-12 in his eighth year at the helm. "We have a long history with these teams. We've had some great battles over the years and I expect more of the same this weekend, so our guys need to be ready."

UCO first met Adams State during the 1976-77 season and has a 27-5-1 lead in the series, including a tough 24-15 home win last year. The Bronchos have never lost to the Thunderwolves, owning a 21-0 advantage in a series that started in 1984.

Central returns to Edmond for its final two home duals of the season, hosting Central Missouri on Feb. 4 and Drury on Feb. 11, before finishing the regular season Feb. 16-17 with back-to-back matches at Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State.

ABOUT THE BRONCHOS: UCO went to Kearney, Neb. last weekend for the Midwest Dual and picked up a pair of wins, topping No. 18 Northern State 22-16 before thumping Western Colorado 34-6.

The Bronchos trailed NSU 16-9 with three weights remaining before rallying, getting technical falls from 184 Garrett Wells and Hvy Shawn Streck along with a 5-0 shutout from 197 Dalton Abney.

UCO racked up five bonus-point wins in the rout of WCU, with a first-period fall by 133 Shaun Muse leading the way.

All 10 starters are ranked in the top 12 at their respective weight, led by Abney and Streck at No. 1. The defending national champions are both 7-0 in limited action this season and neither has allowed an offensive point.

Abney will be looking for his 80th career win this weekend. The four-time All-American and two-time national champion is currently 79-6 with 41 bonus wins.

Streck has five technical falls and two major decisions in his 7-0 start, having outscored those seven opponents a combined 127-25. Last year's Division II Wrestler of the Year is riding a 33-match winning streak.

UCO's other ranked wrestlers are 157 Gabe Johnson (third), 141 Dylan Lucas (fourth), Wells (fifth), 174 Anthony DesVigne (seventh), 165 Hunter Jump (ninth), 149 Dylan Brown (10th), 125 Guy Clevenger (11th) and 133 Shaun Muse (11th).

Wells continues to lead the team in wins with 22 (22-6), including 10 bonus victories, while Lucas (21-3) and Clevenger (21-8) are right behind with 21 apiece. Lucas has 14 bonus wins and Clevenger 12.

Jump has wrestled six overtime matches this season, having gone 3-3 in those bouts.
