Central Oklahoma Falls At Buzzer

Bronchos Drop MIAA Road Game At Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Central Oklahoma got a rebound, got the ball to its best player in Jaden Wells, but a buzzer-beater shot didn't get off cleanly and Central Oklahoma lost 57-56 at Missouri Western Saturday evening.

Wells led the Bronchos with 24 points and was the only Broncho in double figures. Luke Haasl and Danquez Dawsey both scored eight points, Mike Quick Jr.  and Majok Majouk scored six, and Preston Aymond added four to round out the scoring for UCO.

"I thought we did a good job fighting for it, and we just weren't able to get it done," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We let them make a big run and put us in a bad spot, but we had a chance and we just didn't get it done."

An 11-0 run by Missouri Western turned the tide in the second half. From just over nine minutes left in the half, with UCO in front 48-42, Western put together an 11-0 run that spanned more than six minutes and left the Bronchos behind 53-48.

Central responded, with Dawsey and Quick Jr. scoring to get it back to one, 53-52. Wells and Quick Jr. also scored the last four points of the game to get it back to 57-56.

UCO and Missouri Western went back and forth in the first part of the first half, with eight lead changes and four ties in the first 20 minutes. The Bronchos led 20-19 before a 7-0 run by the host Griffons gave them the lead for the remainder of the half. Wells sank three free-throws with 45 seconds left before the half to cut the deficit to five points, 30-25.

Central Oklahoma shot 36.4 percent in the game, making 20 of 55 shots. UCO went 4-for-13 from behind the arc – all makes by Wells – and just 12-for-20 from the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma has one more road game in its three-game swing. The Bronchos visit Newman next Saturday, Jan. 27, in Wichita, Kansas. UCO returns home Feb. 1 to host Pittsburg State. The Bronchos will also play Missouri Southern Feb. 3 at Hamilton Field House.
