Bronchos Turn Back TWU in Five-set Thriller

DENTON, Texas (Sept. 8) – Four players had double-digit kills for Central Oklahoma in a tough five-set triumph over host Texas Woman's Friday night to end first-day play in the Denton Volleyfest.

The Bronchos looked to be in good shape after taking 25-17 and 25-20 wins in the first two sets only to see the Pioneers pull out a pair of tight two-point victories in the next two sets. But UCO prevailed in the end, taking the deciding set 15-9.

"It was a tough match," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We got off to a great start and looked to be in good shape, but they battled back. I was proud of the way the girls responded the final set to pull out a good win."

The Bronchos improved to 6-1 and finish up the two-day event Saturday at Kitty Magee Arena with matches against Illinois-Springfield (2 p.m.) and Ouachita Baptist (7 p.m.).

Sydney Huck led UCO, hitting .319 with 20 kills and five errors in 47 attacks while adding 13 digs and Addison Wimmer had 18 kills. Jenna Karp hit a blistering .450 with 11 kills and two miscues in 20 attempts and Mallorie Koehn chipped in 10 kills.

The Bronchos also got nine kills and four blocks from Mikiah Perdue. Lindsey Houran directed the offense, dishing out 59 assists to go along with 18 digs and four kills, while Jaedynn Evans had a match-high 23 digs.

UCO broke away from a 5-5 tie in the fifth set as Karp and Houran had back-to-back kills. A TWU error and combined block by Huck and Perdue made it 9-5 and the Bronchos maintained at least a four-point cushion the rest of the way before ending it on Wimmer's final kill.

Wimmer also got the first set off to a quick start with three straight kills, followed by Houran and Huck kills to stake UCO to a 5-0 lead. It was 7-1 after Karp's slam at the net, but the Pioneers battled back to get within 12-8.

The Bronchos responded with kills by Karp and Perdue along with TWU attack error to go up 15-8 and the lead was never less than six the rest of the way. Wimmer and Huck finished with five kills apiece in the set.

It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the early going of the second set and was tied 7-7 before consecutive kills by Huck, Koehn and Perdue put UCO ahead for good.

Central appeared in control with a 21-17 lead, but the Pioneers rallied to within 21-20. The Bronchos then reeled off four straight points to end it, getting two kills from Karp and another from Houran along with a TWU error.

The Pioneers got back in the match by rallying to take the third set after UCO had overcome an early deficit. The Bronchos were down 12-9 going on a 5-0 run to go ahead 14-12 as Karp had two aces and Huck two kills.

It was a 22-20 lead after a Wimmer kick, but TWU finished the set on a 5-1 run to stay alive.

The Pioneers then tied the match with a thrilling fourth-set victory.

TWU led most of the early going, with the Bronchos going up 13-10 after a 6-1 run fueled by three Wimmer kills. It was a 16-12 lead after a Lari Migliorino kill, but the Pioneers surged back in front 19-18 and it was back-and-forth the rest of the way.

UCO staved off two set points before Houran's dump at the net put them on the cusp of closing the match out with a 26-25 lead, but the Bronchos scored just once more as Texas Woman's claimed the wild 29-27 win.
