Bronchos Tripped at SNU

Central Oklahoma Falls In Five Sets As Early Season Road Trip Rolls Along

BETHANY, Okla. – Central Oklahoma couldn't contain its own miscues and ended up on the wrong side of 3-2 decision at Southern Nazarene in a non-conference matchup Tuesday night.

The Bronchos (4-1) took a 2-0 lead in the match despite an abundance of attack errors in the early going. Then SNU took advantage and momentum as it mounted a big comeback for the five-set win.

"Credit to Southern Nazarene, they earned it tonight," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We didn't help ourselves, but they earned it. We've got to work on limiting those mistakes and just playing better overall."

UCO hit .171 for the match with 30 errors. The Bronchos did have four players with double-digit kills in the match and five Central players had at least 10 digs.

Sydney Huck led the Bronchos with 15 kills and added 10 digs. Jenna Karp had 14 kills. Mallorie Koehn chipped in with a dozen kills. And Addison Wimmer added 10 kills and 14 digs.

Jaedynn Evans made her season debut Tuesday night and the returning All-American helped the Bronchos with 28 digs from the libero spot. Lindsey Houran and Riley Roberts also were big on defense as the two shared time at setter. Houran dished out 28 assists and 12 digs while Roberts had 23 assists and 13 digs.

UCO picked up a 25-22 win in the first set. Karp put the Bronchos in front 11-10 midway into the frame and UCO, which eventually led 20-14, never trailed after Karp's kill in route to the three-point win.

In the second set, despite hitting just .064 with nine attack errors, the Bronchos picked up a 25-19 win to take what seemed to be a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. This time it was Huck's kill that gave UCO a 10-9 lead and the Bronchos didn't look back.

The third set is where SNU swung momentum. Seven ties (13-13, 14-14, 15-15, 16-16, 17-17, 18-18, and 19-19) occurred as the teams fought for every point. But a 3-0 run by the hosts made it 22-19 and the Bronchos ended up dropping the set 25-21.

The fourth had a little drama too, but a different pace than the third. UCO and SNU were tied twice – at 1-1 and again at 22-22. The Bronchos trailed 10-3 early in the set and fought back to force the late tie, but Southern Nazarene found a way to edge out a 25-23 win and force the fifth set.

While there were five ties again in the fifth set, there was only one lead change. The Bronchos had a 13-9 lead, but a service error by UCO started a 5-0 run by the Crimson Storm. Central Oklahoma went behind 14-13, but tied the match right after that. Then UCO was down 15-14, but again tied the match on the next point.

Unfortunately for the Bronchos, SNU got back in front and then ended the match with a service ace to take a 17-15 win in the fifth set.

Central Oklahoma continues its 9-match road trip to start the 2023 season this weekend in Denton, Texas. UCO will play Arkansas Monticello, Texas Woman's, Illinois-Springfield, and Ouachita Baptist at TWU's early season festival. The Bronchos are scheduled to make their home debut next Tuesday, Sept. 12, against Oklahoma Baptist.
