Bronchos Blank Rogers State

Central Oklahoma Beat Rogers State 3-0 Friday Night In A Non-Conference Game Between MIAA Rivals

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Central Oklahoma had an all-around solid effort in beating Rogers State 3-0 Friday night. The match was a non-conference contest. The Bronchos begin their 11-game league schedule Sunday at Northeastern State.

Claire Mullen scored from outside of the box in the first half and Lauren Piper and Matilda Torres put things away in the second half. Avery Bass played the full 90 in goal and directed a great defensive effort as UCO earned its second shutout of the season – both in the last three games.

"We played good on both sides of the field tonight," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "Our defense was really solid and we were glad to see the aggressive attack on offense."

UCO outshot Rogers State 16-7, with a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Bronchos pressed early and often and it paid off Friday night.

Mullen scored her first career goal in the 38th minute. The freshman from Lawrence, Kansas snatched a ball from Rogers State on the top right side of the 18-yard box. She took one dribble to her right and fired a shot that sailed over the Rogers keeper and into the back of the net.

UCO took eight shots in the first half and put every one of them on goal. But it did go to halftime just 1-0.

In the second half, the Bronchos kept pressing. UCO took eight more shots and put four on goal. Two of those found the back of the net.

In the 59th minute, a long ball played up from midfield by Kassidy Collins to the top of the box was headed by Amaya Grace just inside to the left. Piper used her first touch to redirect the ball and shake a defender before she fired in the second goal past the RSU keeper. Piper, a sophomore from Rockwall, Texas, scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

UCO added another nail in the coffin in the 82nd minute. Madison Linavong got a ball at mifield, charged forward about 20 yards and made a brilliant through pass to Torres on the right side of the box. Torres flipped a shot past the keeper and gave the Bronchos their final, 3-0.

Bass made two saves on the night. The Broncho defense earned its second shutout in three games. UCO beat Newman and Rogers State on either side of loss to Northeastern State. Those three MIAA rivals were each played in the non-conference portion of Central Oklahoma's schedule.

UCO starts MIAA play Sunday at Northeastern State. The Bronchos will host Central Missouri and Missouri Southern next weekend as part of Homecoming Week. Friday night, as UCO volleyball hosts UCM at 5 p.m., the soccer team will also host UCM at Tom Thompson Field at 7 p.m. Campus celebrations will bring Rock The Block to Buddy's Lawn between the two athletics events during the night.
