Central Fights Past SWOSU In Texas

UCO Gets Four-Set Win Over Bulldogs To Improve To 3-0 In 2023

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Central Oklahoma earned a 3-1 decision over Southwestern Oklahoma State in its third match at the season-opening Midwestern State Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos (3-0) overcame a tough start to win three-straight sets. The Bulldogs (2-1) got a 25-23 win in the first set before UCO won the next three.

"We didn't play well in the first set, but we did a good job of keeping our composure and focus to get the win," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "Southwestern is a good team and they made us earn every point today."

Central Oklahoma went 2-0 on Friday at Midwestern, including a win over the host Mustangs. The Bronchos will wrap up the two-day, four-match affair Saturday evening against Eastern New Mexico (1-2).

After a tough first set where the Bronchos hit .130, Central Oklahoma responded with solid play all around. Junior middle Jenna Karp led the team with 18 kills, while junior transfer and outside hitter Addison Wimmer totaled 14 kills and sophomore standout Sydney Huck added 11 kills.

Lindsey Houran and Riley Roberts both set the action for the Bronchos. Houran led the team with 33 assists while adding 14 digs and five kills. Roberts had 13 assists and nine kills. Katie Le had 19 digs to lead the defense.

UCO nearly came back in the first set. As SWOSU was ready to close it out with a 24-19 lead, the Bronchos stormed back with four straight points before falling 25-23.

The Bronchos took a 3-2 lead in the second set and never trailed again, leading by as many as eight points, 22-14. Southwestern tried the late rally in the second before the Bronchos put it away, 25-23.

Southwestern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set, but a 4-0 run by the Bronchos that included three errors by SWOSU, put UCO in front for good. The set wasn't easy though as Central never led by more than five points.

UCO did need to rally to finish off the match. A back-and-forth set with more than a dozen lead changes had the Bronchos down 20-16 following a 6-0 run by the Bulldogs. UCO trailed 23-21 before scoring the final four points of the match.

A service error by SWOSU made it 23-22, then Wimmer had back-to-back kills to give the Bronchos the lead, and Karp finished off a sensational day with her 18th kill to give the Bronchos a 25-23 fourth-set victory and the 3-1 match win.

UCO will play Eastern New Mexico Saturday evening to wrap up the Midwestern State Invitational in Wichita Falls. The Bronchos are back in action next week, taking on Southern Nazarene Tuesday, Sept. 5 in Bethany.
