Bronchos Draw Again, Tie Midwestern State At Home

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma played 90 minutes to a tie for the second time in as many games to start the 2023 season.

UCO 1, Midwestern State 1.

It's the first time in 25 meetings the two schools played to a draw.

"We weren't aggressive enough tonight," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "Our defense was really good except for one little play, but that ultimately cost us. They were more aggressive than we were but we had a chance to win the game. That's twice this week, so we need to work on closing out games moving forward."

Central Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute when freshman Izzy Van Zanten scored her first career goal. Albany Adair passed the ball to Elena Conaway, who brought it down with her chest and turned it to Van Zanten right in front of the goal. She powered home the score to give the Bronchos a late lead.

However, in the 71st minute, Avery Holland's pass back to goalkeeper Caroline Faulkner was taken by MSU's Lexi Beck, who chipped in a score on the far side of the net to tie the match.

UCO was outshot 14-5 in the game, including a 6-1 margin in shots on goal. The Mustangs of Wichita Falls, Texas outshot the Bronchos 8-2 in the first half and 6-3 in the second half.

Faulkner made five saves in the full 90 minutes in goal.

Central Oklahoma tied Angelo State 3-3 earlier this week to open the season. The Bronchos had a 3-1 lead with 10 minutes left in that match.

UCO will stay home for another week. The Bronchos host Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday night in Edmond before welcoming Oklahoma Baptist to Tom Thompson Field next Saturday night.
