Central Oklahoma Beats Southwestern Oklahoma State In Non-Conference Clash With Old Rival

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used an offensive onslaught to earn its first win of the 2023 season Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup with longtime rival Southwestern Oklahoma State.

UCO 4, SWOSU 1.

The Bronchos trailed 1-0 in the match in just the third minute, but a strong rebound had Central Oklahoma ahead 3-1 by halftime.

"We didn't start well, but they did a good job responding early," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "It's good to see too that when they got ahead, they kept working and never got comfortable with the lead."

UCO got two goals from freshman Elena Conaway and another from freshman Emma Nicholas. Matilda Torres added a score as well. Caroline Faulkner played the full 90 in goal for the Bronchos and made one save.

Southwestern only put two shots on target and both were in rapid succession. The Bulldogs got a clean look from straight away inside the 18-yard box that missed. UCO had no defenders back and SWOSU got the rebound and an easy chip shot to go in front 1-0 in the third minute.

Central Oklahoma didn't panic and kept pressing and it wouldn't take long to overthrow the Bulldogs.

Lauren Piper took a shot that a SWOSU defender saved after it got passed the goalkeeper. But that clearance only went a couple of yards before Conaway chipped in the equalizer in the 10th minute.

In the 24th minute, Callen Snider sent in a corner kick that found its way through everyone in the box and Nicholas sat waiting for it on the back side of the box. She punched in her first score of the season and gave UCO the 2-1 lead.

The Bronchos added one more in the first half. Stormie Ramsey sent in a cross in the 33rd minute that a SWOSU defender tried to head away from the goal. But the ball went right at the feet of Torres, who punched in her first career goal and put the Bronchos in front 3-1.

UCO added one late goal in the 72nd minute. Nicholas almost had her second of the night but her 25-yard laser from the top of the box hit the crossbar. Conaway then pulled down the rebound and put in her second score of the night to make it 4-1.

Central Oklahoma outshot Southwestern Oklahoma State 15-8 Wednesday night. The Bronchos had only taken 13 total shots in their first two games combined.

UCO is back at Tom Thompson Field to wrap up a three-game homestand Saturday night. The Bronchos host Oklahoma Baptist at 7 p.m.
