No. 25 Bronchos Roll Over Pitt State

EDMOND (Sept. 16) – Jaedynn Evans' brilliant back-row defense along with a block party at the net spurred No. 25-ranked Central Oklahoma to a sweep of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Pittsburg State Saturday evening at Hamilton Field House.

Evans dug up 27 PSU attacks – including an astounding 15 in the first set alone – and the Bronchos blocked 10 shots in cruising past the Gorillas 25-17, 25-12, 25-21 for their seventh straight win, improving to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

"Our defense was really good tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Jaedynn made some big-time digs and we were a lot more aggressive at the net in coming up with some key blocks. It was a good win over a tough Pitt State team."

Evans, a returning All-American who led Division II in digs per set (6.62) last season, was at the top of her game in continually thwarting PSU's attacks to set up UCO's offense. She had 15 digs in the first set, five in the second and seven in third.

Sydney Huck, Jenna Karp and Addison Wimmer had nine kills apiece to lead the offense, while Mallorie Koehn added eight. Huck had five blocks (two solo, three assisted), Karp didn't have an error in hitting .643 in addition to having three assisted blocks and Koehn hit .350.

Mikiah Perdue chipped in four kills and five blocks (one solo, four assisted) and Lindsey Houran handed out 35 assists to go along with three assisted blocks and a kill.

The Bronchos never trailed in the opening set, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead as Koehn knocked down a kill before Huck had a solo block and teamed with Perdue for another one.

UCO led 8-7 and then reeled off six unanswered points to pull away, getting two kills from Wimmer in that spurt. That made it 14-7 and the Gorillas never got any closer.

It was more of the same in the second set. Koehn and Huck opened with consecutive kills to put the Bronchos on top to stay and a 12-1 run broke it open, with UCO getting three kills and a solo block from Huck and three kills from Wimmer to turn a 5-4 lead into a 17-5 cushion.

Central overcame six service errors to complete the sweep with the tight third-set win.

Wimmer slammed down back-to-back kills to break a 16-16 tie, PSU followed with an error and Houran and Perdue teamed up for a block to make it 20-16. It was 22-21 when the Bronchos finished it off, getting a kill from Huck before Karp slammed consecutive shots down the middle.

UCO opens a three-match league road-swing next Thursday, traveling to Kearney, Neb. To take on No. 7 Nebraska-Kearney.
