UCO Takes Washburn Series With Friday Win

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma earned a series win over Washburn with an 8-1 victory on Saturday at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO, now 25-11 on the year and 13-9 in the MIAA, won 9-5 on Thursday night before Saturday's 8-1 victory. Game 3 is Sunday at 1 p.m.

"The pitching staff deserves a lot of credit today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "They were good all day long. The offense did what they needed to and then put together some runs at the end. It's good to win the series but we still need to be focused on Saturday's game."

Aiden Bagwell got the start for UCO and gave up the one run on just three hits in four innings. Grant Zwald, Jacob Bailey and Jase Farmer then combined to give up only two more hits over the next five innings to shut down the Washburn offense. Bagwell picked up two strikeouts in his time on the bump. Zwald had one in his two innings and Bailey four in his two innings. Farmer got the final three outs in the ninth.

UCO scattered 10 hits in the game. Seth Gray, Wyatt Gray, Landen Wood and Austin Lambert all had two hits, with Lambert's four RBIs leading the way. Aiden Proctor added a leadoff single and scored the game's first run and Orlando Gonzalez added a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to score the game's final run.

Proctor led off the bottom of the first with a single to center field. Seth Gray singled on a bunt and then Noah Olson laid down a sacrifice bunt before Jaden Parsons' sac-fly scored Proctor from third and gave UCO a 1-0 lead.

UCO earned a leadoff walk by Wyatt Gray in the second and then Wood laid down a bunt single before Lambert's sac-bunt moved the runners forward. Wyatt Gray scored on a wild pitch to give UCO the 2-0 lead.

In the sixth, Lambert hit a double down the right field line to score Wood and Cameron Uselton and give the Bronchos a 4-1 lead. He scored wood again in the eighth along with Wyatt Gray on a hard hit ball through the left side to give himself four RBIs and UCO a 6-1 lead.

Then Gonzalez smacked his sixth home run of the season on a two-run shot down the left field line to make it 8-1.

Central Oklahoma started the weekend three games back of Washburn for the fourth-place position in the MIAA standings. The top four teams at the end of this month will host a first-round playoff series. UCO is now just one back heading into Saturday's series finale.
