Diego Dominates

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma beat Washburn 9-5 on Thursday night to open the three-game MIAA series with a victory.

UCO improved to 24-11 on the season with the win and the Bronchos are now 12-9 in the MIAA. Washburn, which is 21-14 overall, is 14-7 in league play. Game 2 is Friday at 3 p.m. and Game 3 Saturday at 1 p.m.

Diego Dominguez got the start for the Bronchos Thursday night. The right-handed pitcher got two outs in the top of the first inning before barely missing the strike zone on a full count to walk a batter. Washburn then rallied behind the walk with three runs on three hits to take an early 3-0 lead.

But Dominguez shut it down after that, holding the Ichabods from Topeka, Kansas hitless over the next seven innings. His final line; eight innings pitched, three runs, four hits and six strikeouts.

"Diego was great for us tonight," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "They got that little rally early and if we get that called strike, none of it happens. But he was great after that and really helped us get the Game 1 win."

Dominguez got help too.

In the bottom of the third inning, a leadoff single by Orlando Gonzalez started a rally for the home team. UCO scored four runs to take a lead and never looked back. The Bronchos got another in the fourth, then kept adding to it throughout the night with two in the sixth and one in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Jaden Parsons led the UCO offense, going 3-for-4 with a double. Seth Gray went 2-for-4 with two RBI singles and a run scored. And Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.

UCO had 10 hits in the game, including doubles from Parsons and Cameron Uselton, and triples from Gonzalez and Austin Lambert.

Jeb Jenkins relieved Dominguez in the ninth and gave up two runs on three hits after striking out the leadoff.

Gonzalez led off the bottom of the third with a single to left center. He moved up to second when Aiden Proctor was hit by a pitch after that. Noah Olson drew a walk to load the bases, then Parsons delivered a single to center to score Gonzalez and give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

Uselton was also hit by a pitch in the inning, scoring Proctor on the play, then Wyatt Gray singled to third base to score Olson and make it 3-3. Landen Wood followed with an RBI groundout that scored Parsons to give UCO the 4-3 lead.

In the fourth, Seth Gray singled to center to score Proctor from second and make it 5-3.

Gonzalez led off the bottom of the sixth with his triple to left center, and scored on a one-out single from Seth Gray to make it 6-3. Seth Gray scored when Wyatt Gray was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning to make it 7-3.

Lambert led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple to right field and scored on a bases-loaded RBI groundout by Olson to make it 8-3.

UCO got its final run in the eighth, when Uselton scored from third on a balk by the Washburn pitcher. He led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wyatt Gray.

Central Oklahoma and Washburn play Friday at 3 p.m. in Game 2, with the final game of the series set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
