UCO Batters Emporia

EMPORIA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma scored early and often in a 20-6 rout of Emporia State Saturday afternoon in Game 2 of the three-game MIAA series.

UCO improved to 31-16 overall with the win and the Bronchos are now 18-14 in the MIAA. Sunday at 1 p.m. will be the final game of the series and the final game of the 2023 regular season. Central is locked into the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Baseball Championship, beginning May 5 against either Pittsburg State or Washburn.

Saturday, UCO blitzed the Hornets. Orlando Gonzalez went 4-for-4 and Noah Olson and Cameron Uselton both had three hits in the game. All nine Bronchos in the starting lineup had at least one hit and six of them had multiple hits in the game.

The Bronchos scored twice in the top of the first inning, and led 6-0 after two innings. It was 7-2 after four, then 16-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning. Central put up four more in the seventh for good measure before getting three outs in the bottom half and inducing the run rule.

Caleb Burchfield picked up the win, throwing five innings. He allowed six runs on nine hits, but didn't walk anyone and struck out four batters. Jase Farmer threw two innings and also struck out four batters. He gave up two hits and a walk, but no runs.

UCO got it started in the top of the first with a bases loaded two RBI single from Seth Gray. Kaleb Glass hit a one-out single earlier in the inning and Olson drew a walk. Uselton was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Gray knocked a two-RBI single to center to score Glass and Olson and make it 2-0.

In the second, Austin Lambert led off the inning with a walk, Gonzalez singled to right, and Aiden Proctor also drew a walk. Glass then did too, which scored Lambert to make it 3-0. After a pitching change, Olson grounded out to second base but scored Gonzalez on the play. Then Jaden Parsons also grounded out to second base and scored Proctor to make it 5-0. Uselton drove Glass in with a double down the right field line to make it 6-0.

Emporia got on the board in the bottom of the third, so UCO responded in the top of the fourth.

Uselton's bunt single to third scored Olson, then Wyatt Gray doubled down the left field line to score Parsons and Uselton and give UCO 9-2 lead.

Central Oklahoma scored seven runs on six hits in the top of the sixth inning to take a commanding 16-3 lead. Lambert and Gonzalez had RBI singles before Proctor had an RBI double. Olson hit a two-RBI single and Usleton a two-RBI triple in the frame.

Lambert and Gonzalez scored again in the seventh after both hit singles earlier in the inning. Both scored when Glass reached on an error. Olson drilled his team-leading 12th home run of the season to make it 20-6.

UCO and ESU wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bronchos know they will travel on Friday, May 5 for the first round of the MIAA Baseball Championship, but won't know where until Sunday afternoon. If Pittsburg State beats Washburn, UCO goes to Topeka. If Washburn beats Pitt State, the Bronchos go to Pittsburg.

The 2023 MIAA Baseball Championship includes the top eight teams in the league following Sunday's finales and begins with a best-of-three series May 5-7. The four advancing teams will play a double-elimination tournament May 12-14 in Warrensburg, Missouri.
