UCO Falls in Finale, Turns To Playoffs

EMPORIA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma dropped the regular season finale Sunday 7-6 at Emporia State and finished the year 31-17.

UCO earned the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Baseball Championship and will travel to No. 4 Pittsburg State Friday for a best-of-three series for the first round of the postseason tournament.

"We would have liked to finish with a win, but we didn't get it," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "But we still get to play on and that's what our focus is. We have to go into the postseason determined to play our best baseball."

UCO nearly had a series sweep Sunday. The Bronchos led 3-1 before a big rally by ESU made it 7-3 in the bottom of the third inning. But in the ninth, Central scored three runs to pull within one, and had the tying run on third when the game ended.

Orlando Gonzalez and Aiden Proctor both singled before a pitching change, then Kaleb Glass hit an RBI single to center field and made it 7-4. Jaden Parsons followed with a triple to right center and scored both Proctor and Glass and made it 7-6. But ESU got back-to-back flyouts to end the game.

Glass led the Bronchos, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. He had a solo home run in the top of the first to give UCO a 1-0 lead.

Matt Baughn also went 3-for-4 with an RBI. He had an RBI single in the second to give UCO a 2-1 lead.

Proctor and Gonzalez both had two hits in the game. Noah Olson, Parsons, Seth Gray and Austin Lambert all had one hit.

UCO used five pitchers on Sunday. Aiden Bagwell got the start and threw two innings, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks. He did strike out two in the game. Grant Zwald threw the third inning, giving up three runs on three hits.

James Wambold threw one inning, Jase Farmer and Valek Cisneros both threw two, and none of those three gave up a run for the Bronchos. Wambold and Farmer both struck out one batter and Cisneros struck out two.

Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State played a three-game series in Edmond earlier this season. Pitt State won Game 1 and 3 in the series with the Bronchos winning Game 2. Next weekend, Game 1 is scheduled for Friday at Pittsburg State. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday, with an if-necessary Game 3 on the docket for Sunday afternoon.
