UCO Takes Newman Series With Sunday Win

WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma beat Newman 11-6 Sunday afternoon, taking the three-game MIAA series from the Jets.

Central Oklahoma improved to 20-9 on the year with the win and the Bronchos are now 9-7 in the MIAA.

"We played really well on offense Saturday and Sunday and if we can be consistent at the plate, we can be a good team," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Our pitching and defense was good, not great, but we did enough to get the win and that's what matters."

UCO got off to a good start offensively for the second game in a row in the series. After scoring 19 runs on 17 hits Saturday, UCO put up three in the top of the first inning with a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly.

While Newman responded with a three-run home run to tie the game in the bottom of the first, UCO kept it up in the second with some opportunistic baseball. Orlando Gonzalez reached base on an error by the Newman center fielder and advanced to third on the play. He scored on a wild pitch to give UCO a 4-3 lead.

Austin Lambert added a solo homer in the top of the third inning to make it 5-3, Central Oklahoma. But Newman added another three in the bottom of the third to take a 6-5 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Gonzalez led off the inning with a single and was the first of three straight for the Bronchos. Aiden Proctor also singled and Seth Gray's single scored Gonzalez to tie the game, 6-6. Jaden Parsons added a sac-fly to score Proctor and give UCO a 7-6 lead.

In the seventh, Landen Wood took matters into his own hands – or legs – with two outs. He drew a two-out walk, then stole second, then stole third. When he swiped his second bag, an error by the Newman catcher also happened and Wood scored on the play to give UCO the 8-6 lead.

Wyatt Gray and Wood both singled to leadoff the ninth, then Gonzalez walked to load the bases with nobody out. Proctor followed with a two-RBI single to make it 10-6.

Proctor was caught stealing for the first out but Seth Gray hit a sac-fly to left field to score Gonzalez and make it the final, 11-6.

UCO scattered 13 hits in the game on Sunday, though Lambert's solo homer was the only extra base hit. Proctor went 3-for-5 and Noah Olson went 3-for-4. Seth Gray was 2-for-4, while Parsons, Lambert, Wood, Wyatt Gray, and Gonzalez all had one hit.

After missing a scheduled start last week, Chris Spry was back on the mound Sunday. He only threw two innings in his return from injury and gave up five runs on five hits and a walk. He did strike out one batter in the game.

Aiden Bagwell threw 2/3 of an inning of relief work and gave up one run on two hits. Grant Zwald picked up the win out of the bullpen, throwing four innings of relief work. He gave up two hits and two walks but no runs.

Jase Farmer (1/3 inning) and Valek Cisneros (2 1/3) also came out of the bullpen and kept Newman off the scoreboard.

Central Oklahoma has one more road game in its five-game trip and that's a Tuesday MIAA matchup at Northeastern State in Tahlequah. UCO will return home next weekend for its three-game league series with Pittsburg State, beginning Friday night at Wendell Simmons Field.
