Central Oklahoma Ends Missouri Southern's Season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Central Oklahoma avenged two of its four losses on the season with a convincing 76-60 victory over Missouri Southern in the MIAA Basketball Championship Quarterfinals at Municipal Auditorium.

The Bronchos, now 25-4 on the season and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, advanced to the semifinals with the win that ended Missouri Southern's season.

"I thought the guys were good tonight," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "That was a battle. We knew it would be. But they responded and were ready for it. I thought we played good on both ends of the floor."

There were only three lead changes in the game Thursday afternoon, but when Jaden Wells broke a 36-36 tie with just over 16 minutes left in the game, the Bronchos never looked back in route to the double-digit victory.

UCO had a 7-0 run shortly after that and 16-5 run later in the half to put the game away.

Camryn Givens led the Bronchos with 21 points and nine rebounds. He went 9-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. His three offensive rebounds were also a game high. Givens scored 10 in the first half and nine in the second half.

Wells scored 18 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals. He went 6-for-16 from the floor and hit one 3-pointer. He also made 5 of 6 free-throws.

Luke Haasl came off the bench and had 13 points. He hit a big step-back three in the first half to beat the shot clock buzzer, and also had a big dunk in the second half as UCO pulled away. Haasl was 4-for-6 in the game and 4-for-4 from the free-throw.

The Bronchos also got nine points from Preston Aymond, who hit two 3-pointers including a dagger corner three with just over a minute to play. Curtis Haywood also scored nine points to go with eight assists, six rebounds and two steals.

Central Oklahoma shot 45.5 percent on Thursday, hitting 25 of 55 shots. The Bronchos were 5 of 18 from 3-point range and 21 of 27 from the free-throw line.

UCO advances to the MIAA Basketball Championship semifinals for the sixth time in 10 appearances in the postseason event. The Bronchos will meet the winner of No. 3 Fort Hays State and No. 6 Rogers State, which play Friday afternoon.
