No. 5 Bronchos Swept In Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. – No. 5 Central Oklahoma had another lead disappear Sunday in dropping the third and final game of its MIAA series at Missouri Southern.

UCO lost 6-3 in Game 3, falling 0-3 in the series.

"We've got a lot of work to do," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We had a good February but none of that matters the way we played this weekend. We have some work to do to get to our best. We're not there yet."

Central Oklahoma lost 5-4 in both Game 1 and Game 2 earlier this weekend. The Bronchos are now 15-6 on the year and 5-4 in the MIAA.

The Bronchos got a 1-0 lead Sunday in the top of the second inning, when Jaden Parsons hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Noah Olson, who led off the inning with a double to left center and moved to third on a Seth Gray single.

Missouri Southern took a 2-1 lead in the third with a pair of RBI singles, but the Bronchos responded later in the game, tying it in the fifth and taking a 3-2 lead in the sixth.

Orlando Gonzalez led off the top of the fifth with a double to right field and advanced to third on a passed ball. He scored on a wild pitch soon after to tie the game, 2-2.

In the seventh, Olson led off with a single to left center, and advanced to second on a flyout by Gray. He moved to third on a Matt Baughn single, then scored on a MSSU infield error to give UCO the 3-2 lead.

But unfortunately for the Bronchos on Sunday, Missouri Southern had one more rally in it as the game went to the bottom of the eighth inning. MSSU scored four runs on three hits to take a 6-3 lead and although UCO got one hit in the ninth, the Lions shut it down for the series sweep.

Central Oklahoma scattered 10 hits on Sunday, with Baughn going 3-for-4 to lead the way. Olson and Gray both had two-hit games.

The Bronchos used five pitchers in the series finale. Aiden Bagwell got the start and gave up two runs on one hit and a walk in 2 1/3 innings of work. Grant Zwald threw 1 2/3 and only allowed two hits. Caleb Burchfield, who was credited with the loss in the game, threw 3 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on four hits. Jeb Jenkins appeared in the game but didn't record an out. And Valek Cisneros finished the game with the final 2/3 innings and had one strikeout.

Central Oklahoma will play the first of three midweek MIAA games Tuesday in Edmond. The Bronchos are hosting Northeastern State in a game originally scheduled for Tuesday in Tahlequah. Due to excessive rain, this game will move to Edmond and another in the series will shift back to Tahlequah.
