No. 5 Bronchos Drop Opener In Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. – No. 5 Central Oklahoma dropped the opening game of its MIAA series at Missouri Southern Friday night, falling 5-4 despite a furious ninth-inning rally.

Central Oklahoma is now 15-4 on the season and the Bronchos are 5-2 in the MIAA.

"We didn't play good at all for eight innings and that cost us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Missouri Southern is a good team and you have to play better than that for the whole game if you want to win. Hopefully the guys can respond tomorrow."

UCO went to the top of the ninth trailing 5-0. Southern's pitcher, Cole Woods, had a no hitter going with no walks issued and nine strikeouts. He did hit two batters earlier in the game for the only thing keeping him from a perfect game.

But the Bronchos weren't going to go away like that.

Shae Morrison led off the ninth with a pinch-hit single to break up the no hitter. Noah Olson drew a walk after that and Woods was removed from the game. Kaleb Glass then singled to short to load the bases and Aiden Proctor drilled a triple to center field to cut the five-run deficit to two, 5-3. Cameron Uselton then singled right after that to score Proctor and make it 5-4.

But UCO couldn't get any closer. Landen Wood pinch ran for Uselton, and Austin Lambert moved him all the way to third on sacrifice bunt, but MSSU got Jaden Parsons and Seth Gray out after that to end the game.

James Wambold got the start for the Bronchos on Friday and gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings of work. He struck out eight in the game. Jase Farmer came on in relief and gave up one run in 1 1/3 innings of work, allowing two hits. After Farmer put two on, Jacob Savage came on in the bottom of the eighth and struck out the next two before getting a flyout to send UCO to its ninth-inning rally.

Game 2 of the three-game MIAA series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. The two will play at the same time Sunday in the series finale.
