UCO Takes Care of Tigers

EDMOND (Feb. 4) – Four different players scored during a 15-4 first-half run that turned a three-point deficit into an eight-point lead and Central Oklahoma went on to topple Fort Hays State 66-51 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The sixth-ranked Bronchos trailed 17-14 midway through the first half before surging in front to stay. Jaden Wells made two long 3-pointers and Luke Haasl scored five points while Danquez Dawsey and Curtis Haywood each had a bucket as UCO grabbed a 29-21 lead.

The Tigers never really threatened after that and Central went on to close out their 14th win in its last 15 outings. The Bronchos improved to 21-2 overall and 15-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play while dropping FHSU to 15-8 and 10-7.

"I thought our defense was outstanding today," head coach Bob Hoffman said. "Our rotations were really good. It's never going to be easy against Fort Hays and we came out with a good win.

"DQ (Dawsey) hit three shots that were huge for us and our bigs had some pretty big buckets too. And Curtis (Haywood) and Jayden (Wells) just continue to make things happen and find ways to win."

Wells led UCO with 22 points, hitting 8-of-13 shots and 4-of-6 3-pointers while adding nine rebounds and two steals. He moved into a tie for fifth place on the school's career 3-point list with 211.

Haywood filled the stat book once again, finishing with 16 points, seven steals, six assists, five rebounds and a blocked shot. Dawsey made 5-of-6 shots with a trey in chipping in 11 points and three steals.

Camryn Givens added eight points, six rebounds and four steals, while Haasl ended with seven points, six rebounds, three steals and a block.

The Bronchos limited FHSU to 37.8-percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers in holding an opponent to under 60 points for the 13th time this season.

The Tigers made the final bucket of the first half to get within six (29-23) at intermission, but a fast start pushed UCO's lead to double digits.

Givens drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key off a Haywood assist and Haywood followed with a quick steal that led to a Wells fastbreak layup for a 34-23 lead just 31 seconds into the second half.

A three-point play pulled FHSU within eight at 36-28 two minutes later, but the Bronchos responded quickly. Wells hit a follow shot, Haywood drove in for a layup and Dawsey drilled a 12-footer to push the advantage back to 15 (43-28) and the game was all but over.

UCO led by double digits the rest of the way in claiming a home-and-home sweep of the Tigers.

The Bronchos don't return to action until next Saturday when they go to Topeka, Kan. to take on Washburn.
