No. 6 UCO Toppled In Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 6 Central Oklahoma hit an early snag on Saturday afternoon at Washburn and the Bronchos let one get away in falling 75-55 in the MIAA road game.

UCO is 21-3 on the season following the loss and 15-3 in the MIAA.

"We didn't do ourselves any favors today," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We didn't shoot the ball well, we didn't take care of the things we needed to. Credit to Washburn. We'll get back home and get ready for the next one."

Central Oklahoma is now in second place in the MIAA following the loss. The Bronchos have four games left in the regular season, including a date with Northwest Missouri, which is one game up in the standings, in two weeks.

Saturday, the Bronchos had an early lead, going up 7-2 in the first few minutes of play. UCO held the marginal advantage for half of the first half, but when Washburn took a 19-17 lead with a 3-pointer with 7:22 left in the first half, the Bronchos never recovered.

Washburn outscored UCO 14-5 over that final seven-plus minutes and took a 30-22 lead into halftime. The Bronchos were just 10-for-27 in the first half (37 percent) and only 1-for-9 from behind the 3-point line (11.1 percent).

The second half never got better. UCO shot 8-for-22 in the second half, 3-for-12 from behind the 3-point line, and couldn't keep pace with Washburn, which pulled away to an eventual 24-point lead before settling on the final, 75-55.

UCO shot 36.7 percent for the game, but did hit 15 of 19 free-throws to help get the ball in the bucket.

Camryn Givens led the Bronchos with 17 points on 7 of 12 shooting. He also had four rebounds. Jaden Wells scored 12 points on 5 of 14 shooting, including 2 of 5 from behind the 3-point line, and added three rebounds and two steals.

Curtis Haywood added eight points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Jalyn Turner scored seven points off the bench. Mike Quick Jr. added five off the bench too, and Danquez Dawsey scored five points to go with two boards in a start. Luke Haasl finished with one point one rebound, and two blocked shots.

Preston Aymond, Ben Averitt, Gunner Korstjens, Austin Fenton, and Tre'Veon Ellis all played but did not score.

Central Oklahoma hosts Rogers State on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Hamilton Field House. The Bronchos also host Northeastern State on Saturday, Feb. 18 and will celebrate its seniors before the game. UCO visits Northwest Missouri on Feb. 23 and wraps up the regular season at Newman on Feb. 25.
